I'm participating in a migraine research study
I went to see my neurologist today for a checkup and she asked me to take part in her study. The full title is "Modulation of the excitability of the occipital cerebral cortex using migraine prophylaxis medications." Basically, she had me read letters flashed on a screen while pressure was placed at the base of my skull. It didn't feel all that great, but hey, I get free Maxalt (which is expensive) out of it plus $50.

I read almost all of the letters correctly, which placed me in the "chronic migraine" category (we already knew I was there). That means that I was able to interpret information even during pain. People who don't have migraines normally can't read the letters because they are so distracted by the pain. The purpose of the study is to see if medications currently used to prevent migraines help control sensitivity to stimulation.

Anyway, it's going to be interesting to see her findings when she's finished. :)

1. I hope her findings can help you with those migraines, FY.
I suffer from them periodically, and take prophylactic meds for it. I wouldn't wish chronic migraines on anyone.

3. I've been taking Topamax for almost two months now.
I've been at the 100 mg (my full dose) for two weeks and it seems to be really helping. I've suffered from these things for over 20 years now and they're just awful. Only after I was in the car accident last year did I really realize how out of control they'd gotten. So... so far, so good.

Yeah, I almost jumped up on the chair and shouted, "Your 'science' is a sham!" but then I thought, "Hey, it's $50." :7

6. Your the perfect patient for that study.
You have the highest pain threshold of anyone I've ever encountered. :scared:

8. Sounds interesting.
Thanks for doing your part for Science. :)

My mom has suffered from chronic migraines for most of her life, so I know well the impact they can cause.

She takes a drug called Emitrex (?) I think....

Good luck with the study! :hi:
