Analyze this dream.
I have to go back to work, so I'll check in later. Just posted this dream I had last night in another post. Wondered if anyone wanted to take a stab at it.

I dreamed I was a man on vacation in a beautiful town in Wisconsin where everyone was a vegetarian. I was lured away by a beautiful woman who wanted to take me out for a hamburger. We arrived in an ugly, dirty town in this hamburger shack. While I was eating I was accosted by the woman's brother who was also her lover, and his thug friends. They sprayed spray paint in my eyes and cut up my face with a pocket knife.

8. I have a lot of dreams about conflict with my mom. (and more details)
This dream was so strange. The beautiful Wisconsin Town was like Oz or Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory or something. The colors were so bright and perfect. There was such a feeling of abundance, freedom and serenity. It was a wonderful place to be.

I didn't particularly want a hamburger, but I followed this woman simply because she asked me.

While we were having burgers in the grey, depressed town, she started making passionate noises, to provoke her nearby brother. It was a trap.

He got angry, and I didn't take him seriously at first. I hadn't done anything. I thought they had a fucked-up relationship but it had nothing to do with me.

Then his friend sprayed can after can of spray paint into my eyes. It was so painful. (been having sinus headaches) I was worried that my eyes would never recover, but I thought there might be a chance, until they cut up my face and eyes with a knife.

Another weird detail: When one of my eyes was cut out, you could see teeth behind it.

So why the gender change?
Why the teeth?
Who is the brother? Who are his friends?
Who is the Woman?
What is the beautiful town?
What is the ugly town?

It's been bugging me all day.

Of course, I am about to change jobs. I'm leaving a place that no longer works for me, but that I know very well (very safe) and will be taking on a huge responsibility in a new environment.

21. About the teeth
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 10:02 AM by miss_american_pie
Were they falling out? Rotted?

Teeth can represent self-image, or power. The shack could represent your self-image also.

Do you have a not-so-good relationship with your mother?

I have a good relationship with my mom now, but it has been very rough in the past.

23. Actually, I Wasn't All That Serious
I am not one who believes terribly in dream analysis. Perhaps for a long term recurring dream, there is something to it. But, as far as dream by dream, i don't think there's a whole lot of evidence (and even most psychiatrists put little stock in it) that dreams are indicative of much other than a random firing of neurochemical receptors.

I wouldn't let it bother you rb. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes a dream is just a dream.

6. There are a lot of symbols in there
but I think only you could say how they tie together.

My guess, someone you work with is causing trouble, maybe gossiping about you wrt a romantic relationship, and your efforts at working with this person aren't effective.

Sorry, I couldn't manage to work Wisconsin in.

I used to vacation in Wisconsin when I was a kid, and I kind of idealize it.

am changing jobs. No one is causing me trouble, but there's a lot of stress in preparing for my departure and some staff is a little slow in learning new things.

12. Sounds like you never got over meat-eater envy as a child
It's caused a neurosis known as "USDGradeA-aphobia". It's rare but with some free association and a twinkle of this watch we may discover that you just want to be a vegetarian.

14. If you are not a vegetarian, look at A) if you are, B)
First: A disclaimer: I am smart but I'm too young to be a trained proffessional, though I am an eager psychology student! (And scientist). Almost exclusively, however, this comes from personal experience. My subconscious went all wrong.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=4867278

A)Your brain has made a link between meat and something not good, for example:
You are eating a hamburger, and since it's supposed to be, it tastes good. You are receiving the message: This is good. At the same time you have thought about probably something like 'this is very fatty' or 'I could be getting mad cow from this' -and remember, it doesn't have to be rational.
This sets up a source of stress linked with the meat or more specifically the taste, but it is not the hamburger itself that is bad, because the message "This is good", like I said above. Then this becomes simple association when in a dream.

1)You are in a nice place, and on impulse, it's a vegetarian place, either due to you considering giving up meat yourself, or because you feel unaccpeted for something.(I trust your idea of a vegetarian is someone who is accepting). However, you are hungry tonight, and want to eat.

2) You are in a place of vegetarians, and you aren't one! Cue social stress. This means you are going to go to somewhere not so wonderful, because you wouldn't feel bad in a beautiful place(that's your subconscious talking, not your conscious), since you want meat, you can't be part of that place.

3) Of course your with a woman. You don't want to be lonely, do you?

4) You're eating meat! Cue aforementioned association stress. Something bad is happening to you, and it's not the burger. Therefore, the only rational explanation is that someone is going to hurt you. Since you are stressed, you are hurt, so there is no fighting back. BTW your face is cut up for the same reason you were with a woman, your own subconscious fear of loneliness. It's pretty strong as far as I can see. I don't know what the brother is lover is means. Probably nothing more than a reason for the guy to be so angry. He was with friends, butch friends I presume, due to the no-fighting back bit mentioned above.

The dream probably started with you wanting to be not lonely. be careful, it's a very powerful and deep rooted impulse.
------------------------------------------------
B) Eat more proteinous vegetables. A google search will help with that, as I am not to present medical opinions on DU. Sounds like a simple dietary imalance, then dream association. It works the same as upthread, but instead of meat/danger stress its meat/guilt stress, not fitting in stress is still there among fellow vegetarians as you have decided to eat meat. Dream in that case was started by the same thing, but then the hunger went toward meat because of diet imbalance.

I had a much longer version that made better sense but I thought I'd better edit it down.

So, what do you think?

20. Alright, I'll take a whack at this.
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 08:45 AM by BlueIris
I think this dream is largely about your desire for more personal freedom and evolution, but also about residual fears of the changes you have longed to put into motion for a long time (moving to a new place that while beautiful and welcoming is also a little strange--the whole area being vegetarians-only, something that also might be about fears of not fitting into your new world). There may even be an as-yet unrealized wish for more change that you haven't addressed because the changes may feel too radical or taboo for you at this point (wandering off with an enticing stranger who encourages you to do something as rebellious as eating meat although you live in a town where no one does). Perhaps you have not acted on these impulses (if they exist) because you are concerned their risks may greatly jeopardize the gains you have made as the result of the changes you've already made (as represented by the hamburger shack being in a yucky city that is a distinct step down from the other town). Maybe you are afraid of making mistakes in your new and improved future, or repeating any mistakes you've made in your past (as horrific as the spray-paint attack is, that's all I think it symbolizes--fear of having your progress eliminated or undercut in not only bad ways but the worst ways, which is why the attackers didn't just blind you temporarily with the paint, they did it permanently with a knife).

27. Thanks so much.
This has been really interesting. Both the sincere and joking replies.

Your insights are great.

I am anxious about starting this new job. I'm very excited, and I think the job is a great fit. But it's a brand new place, brand new co-workers, brand new constituents, board members, donors.

They are very excited about me and feel they've made a great choice. I don't want to let them down.

I tend to worry too much and to be over-prepared.
