when it comes to 'unusual or significant', I've always thought that if I were to father a daughter I'd want to name her either Lysistrata or Lilith (so maybe it's a good thing I don't plan on ever becoming a father)...

Oh, and my screen name is from the graphic novel Transmetropolitan, by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson...set in a dystopian future tht's not so very different from our present, and the main character is a sort of Hunter S Thompson-type outlaw journalist who's on a mission to take down the psychotic, corrupt President.

As someone who had the only "weird" name in the family, I made sure my kids had ordinary names.. I did not want the first thing a person thought of them, to be..weird name :)

They had little nicknames through the years, but I projected years ahead, and imagined those names on a business card, door or marquee :)

I have a friend whose daughter was one of SIX Tiffanys in kindergarten.. she ended up T-4..

34. (Rant): The current fashion of giving girl babies male names:

I cringe whenever I heard of a girl baby named Taylor, Avery, Madison, Jordan, Michael, and yes, Payton or Fallon.

What's the point? Aren't there enough girls' names available? Or did you secretly really want a boy? Or are you just NOT THINKING?

So the school officials look at the name on a list: Taylor Jordan Whooziwhatsiti, and they think, "Okay, which gym class does this kid go to?"

As an adult, she'll get mail addressed to Mr. Taylor Whooziwatsit.

Then there's the ever-shrinking supply of male names. The names Terry, Leslie, and Kim have already been appropriated as female names. Men given those names at the time just before it was "stolen" have to put up with letters addressed to Ms. Terry/Leslie/Kim Whooziwhatsit.

Leave some names for the guys, please, and don't inflict gender confusion on your newborn child. If she's transgendered, she'll tell you when she grows up.

Stupid Southern-belle names like Madison, Shelby & Sloane (gag) drive me nuts. Those are names for Old English sheepdogs, not daughters!

Yeah, I'm cheating and mixing up the first/middle pairs, but that's the best one I can think of. Maybe I just like this because I have a friend who has those as her first and middle names. (Although she spells Leslie like the guitar, Lesley; I prefer the "Leslie" spelling 'cause it's my mom's name. My mom didn't like it growing up, though, 'cause back then the "l-i-e" spelling was the "boy" spelling; however, I don't think there are many boys being named that anymore.)

I like Jean alright, though more as a middle name than a first name. I'm not too big on Josephine or Payton; Payton is a little better with a "Peyton" spelling, but then it makes me think of "Peyton Place", plus it just seems like a boy's name.

But really, all those are just my perceptions of the names based on various things, and everyone's going to have different ones. If I were you I'd just pick a name that has some meaning to you or sounds good to you. I've known some great people with names I didn't happen to like beforehand, who meeting changed my opinion of the name altogether.
