I grew up with guns, had one of my own as a teen, went hunting, etc. But some of the comments over there are damned scary.

I saw some intelligent comments, but also a whole lot of NRA bullet points (no pun intended), knee-jerk reactions and mindless hyperbole.

In fact one of them told that since I am agains guns, I am also against democracy and the constitution (nevermind the fact that I'm Canadian and not subject to the U.S. constitution)

Another once told me that I must be a sex-offender because I would not admit that women are superior to men. I am apparently a dangerous sexist pig for believing in euqlity and equity.

I tell ya, it takes a thick skin to be a DUer, but the Lounge makes it worth while :D

It's like a cage match on most threads. I don't own a gun and have no interest in owning them for any reason but I'm not against them in general. I do lean towards the abolitionist side after reading some of the comments from NRA types that amount to "Draw, pardner." That scares me. That's the mentality that leads to shooting Japanese exchange students and rude kids cutting across your lawn.

Some of those comments were more than a bit disturbing. When you start blaming a kid for getting shot because he was rude and stupid, you know something isn't right in the world.

I'm not an abolitionist per say, I may even one day buy a gun if I ever decide to take up hunting with by brother in law (I've gotten addicted to the constant flow of dear meat in my freezer), but I advocate strict control like we have here in Canada.

Anyway, I think I'll steer clear of the "gungeon" from now on.

21. I stayed out of the line of fire

and only commented on a subthread. I got into the fray on an earlier thread before I realized it was in the gun forum. There are many hunters and a few gun nuts in my family and I tend not to take absolutist positions on stuff like this, but some people do think shooting someone for trespassing alone is acceptable and that I don't get. There was a case about 10-15 years ago in Maine where a guy out deer hunting shot a woman who was on her own deck. His defense was she was wearing white mittens and he thought it was a deer tail. Some people defended him by saying the woman ought to have known better than to wear those during hunting season. All the hunters I knew made one comment: that guy's no hunter, he's a fool with a rifle.
