9. It's quite an impressive bird.

Unfortunately, in the old days, these birds were not much liked since everybody thought they bring death into the house if you spot them.

I'm sure your husband's great-grandfather had seen them.

12. I don't understand it either.

I think here it had to do a lot with the fact that the owl is a night creature, and their call might have been a bit freaky if you're alone in the woods and hear it. Funny enough, where we live, there are still some legends vividly alive. Like the ones that snakes like to drink milk and are therefore attracted to babies. And so on.

;) I know. I was once a little bit freaked out when I had my last cigarette at night in summer, wandering off into the street (I had on bermuda shorts), haring some 'tap tap tap' and looking up. There was a quite big badger just heading my way ...

A couple of summers ago, a couple of friends and I were walking in the evening, and saw what appeared to be a cat, feasting on the food that had been left out for him. When we got a little closer, one of my friends suggested that we might want to choose another route, however. It seems the "cat" was actually a skunk...

19. Well,

you always can burn your clothing and spend a few hours under the shower after a skunk sprayed you, but a full grown badger has quite some nice teeth. This one obviously had never seen a human before, so her/him was quite interested in me. Only after my pretty loud "You go your way, I go my way" he turned back with something that sounded like a deep hiss and took the short way through our hedge.

Other encounters of mine: snakes, foxes, deers, etc.

20. I don't think I'd want to run into a scared badger, that's for certain.

We have little grey foxes around here; but there's been a lot of recent development, and I'm not seeing as many as I used to. :(

I'm hoping they've just found better hiding places.

5. we have barred owls here.

they are very cool, friendly, make all sorts of weird noises as well as hoo hoo ho-hoooooo. Hissing, snarling, and very friendly.

7. Love owls

I've got a couple residing in the forest behind our house. Hear them all the time around sunset, but all I've seen is a flash of body and wings as they fly back further into the forest. Look to be fairly big birds though. I'm keeping a better eye out these days so that I can ID what particular type of owl they are.
