For our big girl, I miss you,sweetheart.

She had bone cancer. It just became too hard for her. I did everything except cut off her leg(actually have amputated) . That really is just a gamble for time, no guarantees it will really help. We had to put her to sleep last week. I thought I was OK with that. It was all displacement. I miss her, she was my good friend. Saint Bernard's are really ...just...family.

7. Thanks, the last couple of days have been a bit hard.

I think I kept pushing back the feelings thing. I'm not usually so sentimental. I think it is because we were so alike. We understood one another. She was her own person. We cooperated, were partners. I'm more of a cat person. But this dog was different. We only had her for just over a year, she was from rescue. How someone could have abandoned that dog is completely beyond me.

6. I'm so sorry. I lost my buddy Max to bone cancer

after 13 years of love. It was a long time ago, but I still remember. Then we lost Erin, our Irish Wolfhound, who lived to be 14 (!!) just months later.

I love big dogs. I always wished I'd had a St. Bernard.

8. Well, if you ever decide to get one the rescue group is great.

I asked for a "dry mouth" which is quite relative, and one who gets along with cats. She was the best dog, great with cats, dogs, kids...very well mannered, but loyal and protective. I love the big dogs, too. Cats and big dogs, go figure. I am so sorry for your losses, but we are, indeed, better people for having known them.

Dogs really are incredible creatures. I've always loved all animals, but thought of myself as more of a cat person. Until Sarah came into our lives. She has taught me so much about love, loyalty and devotion. She's made me a better person, just as you describe your experience.

She also inspired me to learn more about dogs in general. As a result, I am doing a doggie topic for my Master's thesis. The more I learn about them, the more I discover what special creatures they are. They have been our loyal friends for over 14,000 years, much longer than any other domesticated animal. They have stood by us no matter what crimes we commit against their bodies, minds and genetic code.

There is no question in my mind that if there is a "great beyond" that we will meet with all of our animal companions that have preceeded us.

We had a St. Bernard when I was a kid. Her name was Geraldine. She was a gorgeous, HUGE, super friendly beast, and we all loved her. However, we couldn't keep her so she went to live with a friend of ours who had a big farm. I understand she finally died of old age many years later.

we had to put our sweet Emma to sleep 3 weeks ago, as she was suffering with kidney failure.

Our furry kids really are family. Emma came to us from Cocker Spaniel Rescue, and had quite a hard start in life. However, when she got to us, she deserved being spoiled, and boy, was she! We expect to see her again, and she will be happy and healthy, and full of kisses! You will see your sweet big girl again too. I firmly believe she is healthy and whole, and out of pain. Sometimes I think I still see her out of the corner of my eye. One of her vets says that is perfectly normal. She has done the same thing when she has lost a favorite pet. (All of her dogs are favorites. :)) I think that puts the poem in an interesting context.

27. Toby, my border terrier

who died at 17, disappeared in the woods for 5 days when he was 15. He was deaf and half blind. We looked everywhere for him. We thought a hawk or eagle had taken him. When he was found, he was surprisingly alright. Didn't even look that dirty to have been wandering in the woods for that long. When I die, before I even greet the family (if there is a heaven), I'm going directly to Toby and find out where he was and what he did those five days. (I'm assuming he will be able to talk in heaven.) My son says that he probably decided to have one great adventure before he died.

31. I'm so sorry for the loss of your girl, MissMarple...

I lost my girl (11 year old beagle) to heart failure a week ago last Sunday. We're getting her ashes back in a few days. She had so many things wrong with her. The vets told us many times that she didn't have much time left from the time she was a puppy until last week but I loved every minute of her life and I think she loved being with me. I'm sure your girl loved every minute she had with you, especially since you rescued her and saved her when no one else would.

My sister's boyfriend sent her an email with the following poem/passage in it. He copied it from a card that he got when his dog died. It is perfect...

"The Rainbow Bridge"
There is a bridge connecting heaven and Earth. It is called the
Rainbow Bridge because of its colors. Just this side of the
Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys of
lash green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is
always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and
frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made
whole. They play together all day.

There is only one thing missing; they are not with their special
person who loved them on Earth. Each day they run an dplay
until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks

And this one suddenly runs from the group.

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet,
you take her in your arms and you look once more into the eyes

I feel for you...my dog has been one of the brightest spots in my life. He never wants me to leave him..when I leave the room he follows...when I leave for work, he's right there at the door waiting for my return...since I've been injured, he's sat right next to my bed with his nose in my face all day.

St Bernards are wonderful dogs...I am so sorry for your loss :hug:
