Poll question: Which one of these boys would be LEAST likely to be beaten at school?
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 01:41 PM by BlueIris
On the basis of his name alone, that is.

1. Ten years from now
public schools will be so screwed up you'll need to homeschool.

Anyhow, I like most of those names, and I assure you kids will find some other reason to beat each other up.

2. Okay. Like what?
There wasn't a lot of beating at any of the schools I went to.

3. That was sort of my point
Kids picked on each other all the time, for all sorts of things.

But actually beating? At school? There was enough supervision that physical fights didn't happen all that often.

I'm sure no matter what name you decide on, if you post it here someone will make a negative comment.

5. Yeah, no one here seems to like my names.
But I guess that's the real world.

4. Miles is a good name. Very Yankee.
Asa? Looks like an acronym for something.

Lane? I guess as long as his middle name isn't "change".

7. I'm...really not going to be naming him Jack. I'd sooner name him
John Smith.

8. Wade sounds like a kid who breaks 2 x 4s on his head just for fun.
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 02:11 PM by Gormy Cuss
That's why I picked that name.

9. I've always thought Wade sounded lovely and dignified.
John and Elizabeth Edwards named one of their sons Wade.

14. The only Wades that I've known would win schoolyard fights.
They weren't bad boys who would pick fights, just lunkish enough to intimidate the bullies who would.
Of course, in the realm of bad boys there's the baseball player Wade Boggs.

22. I've always thought of Wade as a quintessential redneck name, personally.
Partly because its popularity in the south is thanks to one Wade Hampton, Confederate general and slaveowner--who was the first Democrat elected governor of South Carolina after the Civil War (effectively ending Reconstruction), after a campaign marked by a great deal of violence on the part of his white supremacist followers. Not quite as bad as naming your kid 'Bedford Forrest', though.

There was an Asa in my elementary school who also had the qualities you describe in your Asa, which is why I've been carrying that name around on my lists.

16. Some wisdom from uncle George:
"And i'm getting really sick of guys named Todd. It's a good fucking name OK."

"Hi whats your name?"

"Todd.I'm Todd. And this is Blake, and Blaire and Blaine and Brent."

Where all these goofy fucking boys names comin' from. Taylor, Tyler, Jordan, Flynn. These are not real names. You wanna hear a real name? Eddie. Eddie is a real name. What happened to Eddie; he was here a minute ago! Jackie and Johnny and Tommy and Bill. Danny, Larry, Johnny, and Phil. What happened?

Todd. And Cody, and Dillon, and Cameron, and Tucker.

"Hi Tucker, I'm Todd."

"Hi Todd, I'm Tucker."

Fuck Tucker, Tucker sucks. And fuck Tuckers friend Kyle. Thats another soft name for a boy. Kyle.
Soft names make soft people.

I'll bet you ten times out of ten, Nicky, Vinnie, and Tony would beat the shit out of Todd, Kyle, and Tucker "

17. Vance likes to Prance
Tate, Tate he's so late
Nor-mannn (repeat over and over, slowly)
Wade the maid
Zeke (are you really gonna name your kid Ezekiel)
Reuben the Human
Dale will fail
Heath (will be called Heather)
Lane is lame
Asa the ass-a

In my day (at a Catholic school), Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, James, Anthony were all pretty safe.
One kid named Dion -- man did that kid get pounded. Better him than me. Children are unremittingly cruel.

19. "Heath" reminds me of Heath (Lee Majors) Barkley...
from the '60s TV Western "The Big Valley".

Heath was the "illegitimate" son of Mr. Barkley and some hussie from the old West. Despite his checkered past, he was welcomed among the rest of the Barkley family as one of their own. He had to fight for everything he had and was tough and scrappy. So if I had to choose a name for a boy who could take care of himself, it would definitely be Heath.

23. I've been trying to pick decent names for my hypothetical kids.
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 08:07 PM by BlueIris
It's just an issue I'd like to get resolved. I put up some name suggestions in the Lounge the other day, to find out what kind of baby namer I'd be, and people told me (a lot) that the names I'd chosen for boys would mean the boys would get beaten up. Because...I'm not a good baby-namer, apparently. So, these are some names I like, and I wanted to know which ones Loungers thought would be least cruel for a male child to be given. I'd like my son to have a fairly original name, but not if it means other children will pick on him a lot. I can't stand the idea of not getting to name the kid something we'd both like, but--I had to face facts. The names I liked the most would be considered somewhat dorky by many Americans (and non-Americans). If I were to have kids, especially male kids, they'd need all the help they could get. Not so much because I'd be a bad parent, but because...I'm me (read: dorky). So I thought I'd try to get some more input on a collection of names, so I can pick at least one non-dorky one, declare that decision made and stop thinking about it.

25. Your child will be who he is based on your teachings and his genes
Not on any name you give him. If you think he's going to get beat up based on his name, home school him, then you'll never have to worry.

On the other hand, you could teach him early on to stand up for himself. That may be the best thing you can do for him.

B is for Basil assaulted by bears.

29. Aw. Glad someone likes my name, there.
I have a special place in my heart for that one because of Norman McLean and his book, "A River Runs Through It." McLean and I are sort of brain twins.

27. Tastes have changed completely
I've seen my nephew's class list and it is all Julians, Sebastians, Xavier etc. Gone are the days of ten different Mikes in one class. I don't know if they can uses names to determine beat-up-ability anymore.
