Here is a story about a sinner,

The floosie made him spend his dole

A drunken lag in some salvation army mission.

I seem to remember a dialog in Antoine de Saint Exupéry's The Little Prince:

TLP: "Why do you drink?"

The drunkard: "To forget."

TLP: "To forget what?"

The drunkard: "I have forgotten."

That might not be exact, but I think it is close. On the other hand, maybe I have it mixed up with another allegory.
