It's certainly useful to avoid people and I don't think there's an obligation to engage everyone. However, it can be used to create a censored little corner of DU. It's a choice, but a sad one.

I read a post regarding the ignore feature that said 'if someone has you on ignore you can't send them a PM'.

...are not. They tell you in order to hurt you; actually setting up the ignore after that point accomplishes nothing.
