If I get one more question about what's on my iPod, I'm going to scream. It's like asking me how many NFL touchdowns I've scored. Not fucking applicable.

35. Yeah, I know I'm SUPPOSED to want one, but I can't bring myself to. I have
enough trouble with my hearing from having been a musician without making it worse.

And I think it's pretty fucking ridiculous in some cases anyway. If I'm out hiking, I want to listen to nature, not an iPod. Ditto with fishing, skiing, etc. Why can't people spend ONE MINUTE (when they're not on their cellphone) just listening to the world?

We're going to have an epidemic of deafness in this country in fifteen or twenty years, mark my words.

49. You make good points. Which aren't necessarily valid.
Your post seems to make the assumption that in order to use an iPod, it must be in a setting where music is otherwise unusual. But that's simply looking at it the wrong way. Sure, I sometimes use mine when I snowboard. But more often, not. However, it has taken place of my car's music system. And I have a weekend place (a yurt)...it has speakers wired on the deck, inside, six in all. And the iPod is my stereo system. When we travel, 9 hotels out of 10 offer no sound system at all except for the clock radio. A small set of extension speakers and I have all my tunage available in-room, without paying $9 to the hotel.

One (or two) steps beyond: My iPod is also a bootable hard drive for my computer.

I have a Belkin device which transfers photos from my digital camera to my iPod (no, it doesn't have to be a video iPod). Sound silly? Try vacationing in a location without a laptop or any other way to get all your pics off your camera. Memory cards will cost you a fortune if you're on the road for a week and take lots of pictures.

In short (too late?), the iPod isn't all it's cracked down to be. It is not only a very cool little all-around portable music system, it is a backup for your computer, and a storage device for your digital camera. I also use mine as an alarm clock when on the road.

What's not to like?

54. Yes, I Miss The Sound of The Laundromat...
I know I am missing SO much by not hearing the droming of the dryers and the whining of children when I am doing my laundry and listening to my iPod. I know I am missing on a full and rich experience of traffic noise when I'm outside having coffee and listening to the news through my iFM hooked up to my iPod. My slight hearing loss wasn't caused by repeated ruptures of my eardrum due to infections as a child, but to a device that was invented some 30 years later. O! If I had known! And it so sucks having a minature hard drive with 6GB to use as a backup and transport large files!

4. I don't use iTunes, but I have about 7,000 of songs on my harddrive.
I had double that before I had a little harddrive mishap over the summer.

And before anyone decides to get a holier than thou attitude about my downloading: I buy cds as often as possible, and will continue to do so. I also go to shows and buy merchandise whenever possible. I support artists.

It was how bearable dial-up is. Personally, if I was stuck using dial-up I'd be banging my head off the desk constantly, whereas dorktv would not.

25. A question for iTune "detractors"
I was at a gathering a couple of weekends ago, for a ski trip. I was one of six adults, and six teenagers. One of the kids and me had iPods. One of my friends was going to get her SO an iPod for Christmas, but didn't because he didn't want to have to "buy all my music from Apple." Mind you, this guy is not Mr. Tech. In fact, he seems to go out of his way to make sure he uses the most convaluted Window's methods for the simplest tasks. For instance, three of us took digital pictures during our trip, and since this guy had his laptop along, he said he could download all our pictures and do a slide show. HOLY SHIT! I don't know what he was using, but he managed to take what is a one-click, 30-second operation on a Mac with iPhoto, into a 45 minute long process before he could show the first slide. AND HE WASN'T BITCHING. This was just how it's done, he told me. But this is also the same guy who uses LIVE 356! for internet radio, because he thinks iTunes is somehow "complicated." Is it just a Windows way of thinking? It must be complicated to be worthwhile?

The other dad there told us he went to Best Buy or one of those nig boxes, planning to buy an iPod for one of his kids. He didn't, because the saleperson told him he'd have to buy all his music from Apple.

Two people, both professionals, both supposedly intelligent people, both with the same bizarre notion that if they bought an iPod that they'd somehow be beholden to Apple for all their music.

How many others responding to this thread think that owning an iPod means you must buy all your music from Apple? Does everyone realize that the iPod is just a music player? It doesn't give a rat's ass where you get the music you play on it. Why does this myth perpetuate? Of the 2550 songs on my iPod, a very small fraction are purchased from the iTunes Music Store. And when I do buy from Apple, it is because the offer a decent price on most of the downloads. The rest are downloaded from free (legal!) sites like Epitonic.com, or ripped from my own CDs.

Just curious...

Apple's iTunes & iPod are the way to go. Easy, adaptable, and like you said, affordable downloads.

But often I want the artwork and the booklet, so I order the physical CDs. For that reason, I ordered the CD from my new discovery, Katherine Schell. I admit that I also wanted to have the attractive pictures to go with this CD. :-) My iTunes song collection is mostly made up of imported albums, but I have quite a few songs of the week and individual song purchases. I've created 3 playlists called iTunes Sampler, which has the song purchases and free songs of the week.

61. I always at least TRY the song of the week.
And I'm with you. Many of my songs are imported from tangible CDs that I owned before I bought my iPod. I don't really care about having the physical CD's or booklets, however. My complex comes from an idealistic notion that albums are supposed to be listened to as a whole. I always think that I'll be missing something if I don't at least listen to all the songs once. I KNOW that my theory is bullshit because I have songs on my iPod, from some of my favorite albums, that I never...ever....listen to, but I can't help it, I have to download all of them.
