Auuuuugh, statistics.
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 10:13 PM by cssmall
I just emailed my statistics professor (Experimental Design) about the fact that I am beyond confused and generally frustrated within the course. Throughout this semester, I have worked my fingers to the bone, but still have come out behind everyone else within the course it seems. I don't know what to do because I've worked so hard and I'm taking a very hard course to make my advisor happy, but I can't help it, especially when a question tells me to draw more conclusions AFTER the fact that the model is not a statisically sound model. So, in this frustration, I emailed the professor with a problem I had coding a program (for this homework) and the problems I have had throughout this semester. I don't know what to do.

Does this make me seem intellectually immature?

1. I know what you mean - anything math related is a real challenge
for me. I had to take stats in college, and I spent nearly every day in my prof's office. Plus I had a tutor -- you might want to consider that. My tutor, and my prof, helped me a lot.

The really ironic thing was, the quarter after I finished the class, the prof came to me and asked me to TEACH the class for a week, as he was going to be gone. I thought the dear man had lost his freakin' mind. I said, "Uh, Dr. C., don't you remember, I'm the one who had a personalized box of Kleenix in your office. I struggled in stats!" He said, "I know. And that's why you are the perfect person to teach the class, because you understand the struggles they go through." So, I did it, and guess what? I did a great job, acording to the students. They were working on regressions and correlations that week, and I had an absolute blast.

Good luck to you. And again, you might want to consider getting a tutor to help. I know it helped me quite a bit.

2. Suggestion:
Get a tutor. If I did not get one when I was in Statistics I would have been confused in the course. (this is from a girl who failed Calculus her first year of college).

I ended up being the only one getting an A in Statistics. A tutor really helps, even if you're in the middle of the school year. I should have gotten one for the Psychology Statistics course and I ended up getting a C-. Any sort of help is good for your grade.

3. Not at all...I just squeaked in statistics and I wouldn't go back through
it for all the money in the world. It was the worst semester of my life, and I was a 4.0 student. :(

5. God, I loved my statistics class! Way cool. Sorry to hear you are having
problems.

That's about how I am in history classes - I can never keep names straight, and have an awful time wih dates and micro-details like those.

Get thee to a tutor and get some help!

And no, it doesn't make you intellectually immature.

I went to an all-engineering college, and even there, amongst the math whizzes, it seemed that people either "got" statistics, or didn't. It's a very different kind of math.
