14. David Brinkley was on the NBC elevator on November 22, 1963

when we all learned that John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. It was lunchtime at 30 Rockefeller Center, New York, NY -- everyone gathered around the TV set to watch the news. Walter Cronkite's commentary is usually played in retrospectives -- a scene where he becomes visibly emotional.

Don't remember if Huntley-Brinkley went on immediately or not. I do remember I hardly slept that night and we ended up going to St. Patrick's Cathedral, as I recall. I was called in to work on a Saturday with other NBC news production assistants. We helped type copy and check for film for a documentary to play on Saturday. It was a horrific event, seared into my memory. I cried so much that weekend. (I was planning my wedding that month, and actually married on December 21, 1963.)

I just sold it locally to someone who appreciated Beethoven's music! Dad played the violin (badly!) and Mother "chimbled" on the piano. I am just an inspired listener who was in love with Leonard Bernstein -- from afar.
