TV ads for Jaguar Cars???
This means that they have lost it.

A *real* status symbol does not have TV ads!

Have you ever seen an ad for Lotus?

Have you ever seen an ad for Ferrari?

Case closed.

2. Jaguars are Fords, Lotus and Ferrari are their own.
Ford has stockholders.
And the company is struggling mightily.

Lotus and Ferrari sell every single car they can make.

Big difference.

3. Porsche used to advertise on TV.
Can't recall any lately, though. However, I don't think Jaguar has "had it" for quite some time.

Q. Why are all British-built cars required to leak oil?
A. It keeps the roads from rusting.

Q. What are the three positions of a British car's Lucas headlight switch?
A. ON-OFF-FLICKER (Lucas, the Prince of Darkness).

this beautifully restored wooden-sided sedan with a bumpersticker that read:

The parts falling off this car are genuine British-made

16. I had a 1969 Land-Rover Series IIA (Bug-Eye 3-door).
It had a 12 gallon petrol tank and it got 12 mpg. It leaked oil, the lights flickered, and parts did - indeed - fall off! It was hell-hot in the summer and cold as hell in the winter. But it was a great dog wagon. I bought it to take Sirius to Jones Point (on the Potomac River in Alexandria, VA). He was tearing up my vintage Porsche 911S and 356SC.

Yeah, bummer. But we bought a great old prairie cottage in Greenville, SC. I have orders to find a farm close to Greenville.

42. That's one upside to Ford buying Jaguar
The Lucas electricals mostly went away, replaced by a lot of switchgear from Japanese switchmaker and Toyota group member Tokai Rika. I remember when the Jaguar people came to Tokai Rika Michigan's Battle Creek plant, we were going to be making switches for a new Jaguar model (I worked for Tokai Rika for a shade over 10 years in Battle Creek, nearly every switch in the Camry and Corolla come from that plant, as well as Subaru steering column lever switches and quite a bit of Big 3 product.)

43. jaguar is not in the same catagory with ferrari or lotus
I'm not sure why you focus on Ferrari and Lotus. Ferrari and Lotus are very low production sports cars (owned by Fiat and Proton respectively), selling less than 10k cars per year each IIRC. Jaguar competes more with BMW and Mercedes, and sells well over 100k cars per year. It's an expensive luxury car, but still mainstream.

20. The point is, if I may...
Jaguar has not always had TV commercials and ads "just like any other company."

Jaguar relied on the cachet of their brand, and that was enough. It seems that times have changed, and that Jaguar (now part of Ford Motor Co.) has to compete for OUR dollars, instead of the filthy rich.

44. well they've been part of ford for a decade
Like i said in another post, they really compete with Mercedes and BMW, which of course advertise heavily on TV. They gotta compete somehow. I can remember Jaguar commercials as far back as 5+ years ago or so. The one with Sting and the new S-Type was in huge rotation when that car was introduced for the 2000 model year.

The Mercedes Benz 300SL Coupe was made between 1954 and 1957 and nicknamed the Gullwing because of the way the doors opened. They can go as high as $1,000,000 at auction (PS- I don't really have one)

until the end, it shows a woman going various places, getting into clubs without waiting in line and things like that and the tag line was "Gorgeous does what gorgeous wants" or something really pompous and stupid.

34. We have that ad in the UK too.
I hate it because of its implication that being "gorgeous" makes someone a superior human being, and that "gorgeous" trumps all other qualities. It irritates me so much that I don't even notice the car in the ad. Even assuming I wanted a Jag (or could afford one, which I can't), the ad alone would make me look elsewhere.

49. Heh - my 14-year old son's best friend's father
has one too, and he's the stereotype of a sleek but slightly dodgy character who dabbles in lots of dubious businesses, and wants a flash car to reflect his flashy self-image.

Have you ever seen the old BBC series http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/M/htmlM/minder/minder.htm">Minder? The Arthur Daley character had a Jag and that's the kind of guy I'm talking about.

26. Jag TV ads have been around for awhile now...
(especially since Ford bought them)

for starters, Lotus does not sell enough cars in the USA to justify an advertising budget...(they only have ONE model at present!)

same story for Ferrari, but as any fan will tell you, they do their advertising on the racetrack...

There are ads for Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, Lincoln, Porsche...

as far as 'status symbols', there have long been ads for the latest, must-have tech gadget of the hour (100-inch flat screen HD TV or whatever), expensive jewelry (DeBeers and the rest) clothing (too many top-shelf labels to name) and a lot of other luxuries...I guess I'm not understanding your point...

Where ya been, Ben? These aren't new. They ran ads for years before Ford bought them, and then after Ford bought them, the ads became as regular as a Ford ad! Besides, i don't think Jag ever had the cache of Ferrari, or Lamborghini, or something like that. Did they?
