1. Only 10? WTF?
Dear God, this is difficult. I'll have to inlude some comps, I fear. Maybe just one:

The Anthology of American Folk Music, compiled by Harry Smith
Love, Forever Changes
The Pixies, Surfer Rosa
The Stooges, Fun House
John Coltrane, Live in Japan
Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane over the Sea
The Gun Club, Fire of Love
Serge Gainsbourg, Histoire de Melody Nelson
Bob Dylan, Blood on the Tracks
Wire, Pink Flag

Hell, these are the 10 I COULDN'T live without. I can think of about 100 more without which life would be not terribly worth living. :(

4. Can I rip my entire collection to mp3s and put 'em on 10, 8GB DVDs?
And call that my "ten records I can't live without"?

If not, then the ones I would really need are the recordings of my music, and then:

One of my Pink Floyd "Animals" tour bootlegs
Zappa's YCDTOSA "The Helsinki Concert"
Mahler's Sym. No. 2, conducted by Gabe Kaplan and performed by the LSO
Einstein on the Beach, 1992 recording
Steve Reich, Music for 18 Musicians

9. Can't name ten -- but here's three off the top of my head
Savoy Brown - Street Corner Talking
Frank Zappa & the Mothers - Just Another Band From LA
Who - Quadrophenia
I've had a copy of any of those handy as long as I've been buying music. Made sure to hijack them as MP3s back in the good ol' Napster days, too.
John
In fact, I've had Quadrophenia in album, 8-track, cassette, CD and MP3.

14. Just 10? Well, first I would grab my MP3 player, then I'd grab these vinyl
Edited on Tue Mar-28-06 02:50 PM by LynneSin
I have a piece of paper that sticks out where all the LZ vinyl are in my collection. I'd probably just grab the entire area which means I might accidently save Cyndi Lauper and Hewis Lewis in the process. So the 10 vinyl I would save would be:

I had to edit this because I forgot the ELO "Out of the Blue" record. It's significance is the fact that this was the very first vinyl I ever bought (and I still have it) and took me down the path of music ownership & enjoyment. For that very significant reason I'd rather leave CODA behind and make sure this one would come with me. Plus side 3 has the 'COncerto for a Rainy Day' which was some of the best music they every put out

If I could take 16 I'd toss in

25. People think I'm a nutty Led Zeppelin fan...
...but then again they don't know the pain that I went through watching my father die of lung cancer. It was stacks of Led Zeppelin albums in the record player with the headsets on and the volume at 11 that got me through the worst times of my life. I just don't think I would feel complete if I didn't have those Vinyl Records with me for what they represent. I thought I would die when my father died but those records made me decide to live

19. Here's mine, limiting it to the time when "records" were made
i.e. no classical, as those compositions were created without the idea of recordings.

Also, this is how I feel today. Another day might cause me to produce a different list:

1. Social Distortion (self-titled)
2. B-52's: Time Capsule (greatest hits)
3. Eurythmics: Greatest Hits
4. U2: Joshua Tree
5. Depeche Mode: Music for the Masses
6. OMD: Best Of OMD
7. Love and Rockets: Earth, Sun, Moon
8. The Cure: The Head on the Door
9. REM: Reckoning
10. The Jesus and Mary Chain: 21 Singles

29. My List...And ONE everyone shouldn't be without
First you should own this one:

You can get it from here:

http://soul-amp.com

As for the List...I thought of the albums....I have listed the most frequently played albums over almost 40 years, If you ask me this in 6 months it will probably change slightly. The first in the list are the ones I have listened to longest and still do regularly.

I need these:

Beatles - Rubber Soul

My earliest memories are centered around this record. It has been with me my whole life.

Crosby Stills and Nash - Crosby Stills and Nash
Sitting on the porch album, life long favorite from childhood.

The Cars - The Cars
The Cars - Candy O

(I'm counting these two as one because you can't really have one without the other can you...Cars fans know what I am talking about.)

The Doors - The Doors

Oh man...college...freedom, independance, pot...the Doors...in the early 80's made a comeback as a new generation discovered them from seeing the "Light My Fire" video on MTV. When MTV was music.

REM - Murmur
This record changed my life. And set me on a path down music.

Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
Simply one of the greatest albums and songwriting for a rock band ever.

Holst - The Planets
I was searching through the bargin bins in 1981 at USD bookstore and bought this disk for $2. Ever scince then I have always owned this piece. And listen to regularly. It is actually a big influence on me. It is bold, gentle, lyrical and emotional.

Wilco - A Ghost Is Born

From the second I heard this disk I knew it was a keeper. 5 could realte to this sound on so many levels. Everytime I listen to it it gets better

Soul Amp - Strip Mall Heaven

Yeah I know it is my band but I listen to it at least once a week. It represents a goal I had been working on for 20 years and pretty much sums up life in our modern age. Writing and recording an album...it took lots of work, tears and failures over two years to finally make this thing happen. Making this disk changed my life drastically. Someday I will share that not just yet....And now we are working on the next album. (Which you can download most of our early takes here http://soul-amp.com/.freebies )

I'm very proud of this first disk. It has some things I'd do differently looking back from a year out. But...it is what it is and dang it it is pretty damn emotional rock album...I co-wrote this disk with my best friend and key player.

The Fray - How To Save A Life

I saw them in concert and took my 15 year old daughter. Having listened to them before hand a lot. it made me cry they were so good and all the different ages at the show...was inspiring, old and young sharing a great vibe, energy and a lot of heart from this band.
