Looking at this thread it seems like a large percent of DU'ers have some Irish heritage.

That table only lists a single ethnicity for each person. But most Americans are mutts. I'm part Irish, German and Italian. I would identify myself as Irish because that's 6/8 great-grandparents- I wouldn't say I was Italian.

...the Kneale family, which is related to both the Irish O'Neills and Clan MacNeil of Scotland. Both are descendants of the Irish High King, Niall, but I'm not sure of the direct line of my family -- most likely we're Scots-Irish.

This, of course, only makes up 12.5% of my ancestry, but it's the only one I've been able to trace back more than a couple of generations.

My Scottish ancestors helped Bonnie Prince Charlie at one time--Flora MacDonald of Clan Ranald (my mom's people) hid him for a long time on the Isle of Skye.

On my dad's side, the Irish is from the Kennedy family. I don't know whether we're related in any way to the most famous Kennedys, though. However, both parents were not from abroad, but from Canada--Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

They emigrated to the U.S. in the early 20s - most to Boston, but one branch went to Florida (one great-uncle became the mayor of Tampa).

Ever have anyone tell you it's not acceptable as is? Try having and Irish last name. The world's computers (especially those in airports) are NOT set up to deal with apostrophes.

My university couldn't decide whether a last name starting with O'D belonged in the "O" line or the "D" line at the bursar's office, so they varied it every semester. Fun.
