What's the WORST part about doing laundry?
I absolutely hate separating the clothes. There's always one or two items that just don't fit anywhere.

And you?

5. Then imagine what my between-college job was.
Folding clothes at a semi-trendy men's clothing store. Then again it may be different as I view it as merchandise and not as clothing. It only becomes clothing to me when I buy it and then wear it.

Mark.

4. The whole thing. Especially when your washer/dryer breaks down.
Then you have to figure out a plan B. This gets tight when you're short on cash and can't afford to take your washing to the launderette. Fortunately in our case we have family. Last time this happened the clothes got washed at home and dried at my in-laws.

If there's a worst part about it is folding up the clothes and putting them away after they've been cleaned.

Mark.

I consider it a household responsibility. You sort all the wash, you hang and fold everything. It get challenging. When the girls were little it was Dad, me and small, medium and large. Then they all got big.....

But then... I don't iron as a rule. The "wrinkless" shirts from Brooks Brothers last a LONG time between ironings, and a local cleaner still does dress shirts (wash & iron) for $0.99.

When you're needed away from home too many hours to do a regular wash you'll be happy for the extra stuff.

Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 10:37 PM by fleabert

really, I love it. the smell reminds me of one of my first jobs, at a dry cleaner/Laundry. We 'shook shirts' on Saturdays to prep for Monday's pressing. My hands were always so soft after doing it - from the starch (that is put in the wash with the shirts in industrial laundries, not when they are pressed)

I have really good memories of that job. I wanted to press, but the boss said I was too young- it takes a steady and mature hand to do it. The folks that did it loved it too, had all worked there for years and years.

I have to add- I don't prefer to iron. I will do it, but not often. I think it's generally a waste of time. They just get wrinkled again when you get in the car or sit down. Any wrinkle that can't come out in the dryer is almost always going to stay.

54. Donning a hazmat suit to deal with the upstairs-boys' laziness
The boys upstairs tend to leave laundry in the communal laundry room for days on end...sometimes, it sits in the washer (or on top of the dryer or on the floor) half-wet.

Two more weeks and we'll be moving to a place with a shared laundry room BUT our own washer/dryer...and adults living upstairs...

56. Putting them away
I try and get the kids to do it but usually find them -- still folded -- in the laundry the next time I sort.

And the stairs. Bedrooms are upstairs so that's where the laundry accumulates the most -- and where it belongs when it's time to put it away. Laundry's in the basement, though. Those stairs are gonna kill me one day...

I like the rest, though. Even the ironing's not too bad...when I do it.

And now for some shameless self-promotion:

59. IT NEVER ENDS.
You have to do it every weekend. Or every day, if you have a bunch of people in the house. every g-d- day! And then you have to get the loads together. And then when the dryer buzzes you have to rush down NOW so they don't wrinkle. And if it's just towels in the washer, you think "it's just towels, I'll get them later," then a week later when you remember, you have to run them again and add laundry-strength febreze or something to get out the mildew smell....

god, i hate doing laundry.

:hi: Rev. Guess what? I'm an agnostic, not an atheist, today. Tomorrow, who knows? :hi:

Honey, I have been vacillating between agnosticism and atheism for 20 years. Atheism usually wins. But I don't begrudge anyone his or her beliefs.

Right now I am so desperate for a community AND so desperate to sing that I am seriously tempted to go down the street and ask if I can join the choir at St. Paul's Episcopal. :shakinghead:

Yet there's a woman at work... when she was new i saw her reading a "Christian" romance novel on lunch break. One led to another and I told her I was a believer -- was meaning past tense -- and suddenly for months she has been all over me, won't leave me alone, telling me she's praying for me, asking me to pray for her. VERY nice woman. She was hit by a cab and the instant I heard I was at the hospital. But I would do that for anyone. I can't get her to go away. It sounds so cold but I can't take the constant godspeak, Rev, or even the attention. It brings VERY BAD MEMORIES.

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

How on earth did I get off on that?!

edited to get the timeline right - known this woman about 3 years

I hate it when people don't respect boundaries. And too many fundies seem to think it's their mission in life to make everyone just like them.

73. Thank you. It's not so much a conversion thing --
she misunderstood me. I told her I was a believer. When I said that I should have made it clear that "I used to be a believer." No, what she heard is that I AM a believer.

She's not trying to convert me. She acts as if I am one of her number. Well, I was, until age 23. That's why it brings back such bad memories.

I have pulled away seriously in the last few weeks in the name of my natural introversion, which she does respect. I don't wnat to hurt her feelings but neither do I want an episode where I say, "I don't want to hurt your feelings," turn into a lovey-dovey fest where she assumes everything's everything again.

What do I do, Sister? ;) as if you have my answers. but I appreciate your listening.

83. LOL She knows! She and her husband, Bruce, and Mrs. V. and I
have dined together, gone to a baseball game together... These two Christians are truly followers of Christ. When Kathy was very, very sick a few years ago, Bruce, a cab driver in Annapolis (more than an hour from Waldorf), drove Kathy once a week for four weeks to a doctor yet another hour away from Waldorf in a different direction. And gave her a small discount.

I like them personally. I just don't want to spend any time with this woman anymore. I

Then again, maybe I should. Maybe I should just go to lunch with her and tell her, Look, D., I am a borderline atheist. I do not believe in your God. I enjoy talking with you and when say I will pray for you, I lie -- i'm sorry, please forgive me -- but I ALWAYS ask Kathy, who is a believer, to pray for you. Ect., etc.

I wonder what she'd say.

93. definitely a spiritual journey
if i had to have a god, it would be the feline. i find it my mission in life to care for them as if they were my very children. i have to nurse them, neuter/spay them, feed them, give them shelter. Isn't that what Jesus said to do? And if we've done it to "the least," we've done it to him. (Except maybe the spay/neuter part.)

I believe Jesus existed. I don't believe he was god. But as a leader, a philosopher.... He and Mohandas K. Gandhi are The Men.

It's definitely a Journey. Mrs. V. bought me a ticket to go w/ her and a few others to hear Bishop Spong next month at the National Cathedral. I am thinking of going and I am thinking of not going.

Yet there is no god. What on earth is going on?

I'd better go to bed. What a great conversation, Rev. Thank you so much. Sorry about 'jacking your thread. :pals:

Downy Vanilla Lavender softener. Smells way too strong in the bottle but makes towels and bedding smell like heaven coming out of the dryer. Vanilla is the strong note here. Mmmmmm!

I always miss a sock or some damned thing doesn't make it in the wash. Just like the dishwasher - I always miss a cup or something. Don't sweat this small stuff, Rev.

82. Tell you a secret: I LOVE DOING THE LAUNDRY!
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 12:39 AM by Radio_Lady
The motion of the machines, whirling the clothes around, and that warm little laundry room with its dehumidifier. I feel so lucky I have a sink in the laundry room; and the best of all, it's on the upper floor of my two-story house, with all the bedrooms!

The color of the liquid detergents, figuring out how to take our spots, using OxyClean for so many things (except red clay... nothing really takes that out, does it?)

The smell of the dryer sheets -- like rain, sunshine, or even just natural. Soft cotton fabrics. Heavy jeans that go thump, thump, thump.

The mating of socks, then rolling them and putting them neatly into a drawer.

Even going to a pay laundromat and sitting around with other people, trying to figure out who they are and why they are here.

When I visit third world countries, and see laundry out on a line and even women washing their clothes in a river, I realize how lucky I am.

HOWEVER, I MUST TELL YOU -- I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I FEEL THIS WAY. I cut my eye teeth on two children, born fourteen months apart, and then add in three older children of my husband when we married in 1973. Laundry was the lifeblood of the house. Every child wanted to know, "Where are MY clothes? I have to get to school." Yeah. I knew. Three levels of the house. Bedrooms on the top level, laundry on the bottom. "I'll find your green shirt, all right, and then, Dad and I have to get to work!"

Now I'm a retired laundress. But my undies and socks are soaking somewhere in a sink in the house. And Grandpa never had to do any laundry while he was married to me!

My wife has like 230847302940397840382yu439284703298743094 damn socks, of different color, hue, material, and trying to match all 2309809287403840324893 socks together, is enough to make me puke. I miss being able to hang things up outside and just come back three hours later and take it all down, folding as it comes off the line. Now I have to make sure I get things from the washer to the dryer, and the dryer to the bed, and then fold it.

City's got a reg - no clotheslines that are visible from another person's property... and the yards in this neighborhood have chainlink or low picket fences. I've got a lilac hedge growing, but without radioactive fertilizer, it's gonna be a couple years.

ARGH. They make me PAY for a dryer and PAY for the juice to run it, and won't let me use the free, environmentally responsible FREE sunlight because someone might see a dishcloth or a pair of panties and have a freakin' heart attack about their property values.

I rarely got to do it when I was married, because I didn't do it the "right way" for my (now ex-) wife. One of the first things I really got into again after we split was doing laundry. In a weird way, it was liberating to do it for myself again.

As long as I don't wash an inkpen. That can be a mess.

The first time we did laundry together, I asked her why she was separating colors from whites. At that point, she looked at me and said go away. I've never had to do it again.

We're separated, and she still insists on doing it...

"Just carry that basket and put it in there, please."

Man, you're SEPARATED from your wife and she's still doing your laundry? Is that what you're saying? What's up with that? You still livin' in the same house or apartment together? Damn nice of her, I'd say.

When I got separated, I put most of his clothes on the front lawn one day -- in boxes, of course. That was it. Somebody else has done that guy's laundry since that day, February 14, 1971. You may notice it was Valentine's Day, and not a very good one, as I reall. I got a mind like a steel trap..... :)

I just bring the clothes back home once a week.

She will be moving upstairs from me and we will share a laundry chute and laundry room, so it just makes sense still...

Yes, I live a surreal weird life.

176. Believe me, I've heard wilder stories than yours! The folks I won't
forget are the authors of the book "Open Marriage" whom I interviewed in the 1970s. Ironically, I searched for Nena and George O'Neill, and found she just passed away a few days ago. I just learned of it in this New York Times article.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/books/25oneill.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Nena O'Neill, 82, an Author of 'Open Marriage,' Is Dead

By MARGALIT FOX

Published: March 26, 2006

Nena O'Neill, one half of the husband-and-wife team whose best-selling book "Open Marriage" helped spread the youthful sexual revolution of the 1960's to the middle-aged, middle-class Middle America of the 1970's, died on March 9 in Manhattan. She was 82 and lived on the Upper West Side. The apparent cause was respiratory failure, said her son Michael.

Part anthropological survey, part marriage manual, "Open Marriage: A New Life Style for Couples" caused a sensation in the United States and abroad when it was published in 1972. Written by Ms. O'Neill and her husband, George, the book spent more than 40 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list.

Published by M. Evans & Company, "Open Marriage" remains in print in paperback. It has been translated into 14 languages and has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, according to the company's Web site.

"Open Marriage," as the book's champions said emphatically and often, was never intended to be a guide for swingers. Indeed, the book embraced marriage. Its purpose, the authors wrote, was simply "to strip marriage of its antiquated ideals and romantic tinsel and find ways to make it truly contemporary."

MORE AT LINK ABOVE --->

I recall going home to my husband with a copy of the book, and reading it to him. We were just living together at the time (I was doing the laundry... ta-da!). I said, "Let's try this out, OK?" He said, "I really don't think so!" So we actually got married in February 1973.

Guess what? I'm still doing the laundry!

With a wink in her eye,

Radio_Lady

133. Mine I don't mind doing
at all. I quit doing the DH's years ago when he complained his shirts were hung back wards on the hangers and I didn't put his stuff away right. Then he didn't put his own stuff away at all so now he does his own laundry. That was probably the first month we lived together. Now my least favorite part of laundry is putting the hammocks, hanging cubes, tunnels etc back in the ferret cage because you have to become a contortionist to get some of them where they will fit. And yes ferrets have laundry, weekly unless you want stinky ferrets.

cat and dog laundry too, the dogs have their blankets to lay on and the cat beds need washing once in a while but the ferrets are weekly. But the cat and dog stuff is easy to just lay where ever BTW was putting the ferret bedding etc back in the cage.

137. Wolverine, did you actually wash the cellphone, or did it just get wet?
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 03:19 PM by Radio_Lady
When I accidentally spilled water over my Magnavox cellphone while carrying it around in my backpack, the Verizon store where we shop said -- just take the battery out and let the phone dry overnight. Magically, it worked in the morning!

(However, if you put it through the whole wash and rinse cycle -- it's probably kaput!) Sorry about that.

Someone I know dropped his cellphone in the toilet while leaning over to flush. It was in his breast pocket. I imagine it happens often to lots of people. These devices are handy, small, and prone to snuggling in your pocket. Like an Ipod or MP3 player. They'll get washed, too.

In peace,

I started a lonely blog in 2005 at www.livejournal.com
I wrote one entry and then, months later, I requested the adminstrator delete it!

But I'm trying again on the DU. Check out my journal! The DU makes it MUCH easier!

Loved your description of the Museum of Modern Art! Oh, and your musings on Mr. Cheney's quail-shooting incident. That's about it...

I'll have to "Google" the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage. Don't have a clue!

On Edit: I got it! Here: http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/santiago/spancmno.html

Have a great weekend, "dg the Wolverine" -- and say "hi" to Wisconsin (the pink blog says you're in Texas...).

Are you runnin' from the law, podner?

Re: Your Blog ---->

Wolverine, besides doing the writing in a blog, I feel you have to generate traffic and comments, or else it seems as if you're speaking to yourself. At the DU, you can put in your comments in one of the forums, automatically copy the whole conversation to your journal, and you have a built-in audience.

You already have over 1,000 posts at the DU? I don't know much about you, but I would encourage you to start again here, even with what you have already generated. An audience makes a big difference.

However, you may just want to blog secretly. Some DUers are putting in no personal information at all, which is an option. Or you may prefer to stay with Blogger.com and your blog can be more like a secret diary that you don't want your Mom or Dad to see -- or the kids, for that matter!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

I do laundry every day, 2-3 loads. Now with these kids going outside and getting dirty I have to try to get stains out of everything. They seem to go through an unbelievable amount of clothes. Finding all of their little socks and matching them up drives me insane sometimes. At least my husband irons his own clothes.

159. Bedroom -- second floor. Laundry machines -- basement.
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 09:26 PM by Piltdown13
It's an older house (probably close to 100 years), and the stairs are really narrow; the ones down into the basement are also kind of rickety, and there's a really low-hanging beam just over them. So I have to go down those rickety stairs just about bent double carrying a basket of laundry. It's also really easy to forget and smack your head on that beam on the way back up :-(. Still preferable to a laundromat or apartment complex laundry room, though!

Other than that, I actually kind of enjoy doing laundry. Ironing, though...that's a different story!

161. hauling the basket upstairs to the garage ...
.... only to discover that my landlady has already started a huge load of stuff with more waiting in the wings! So I won't be able to get to the machine until that evening, anyway.

Until fairly recently, my least favorite part was opening the dryer door ... some items would fall on the cement floor ... and inevitably, my landlady's cat would have urinated or coughed up a hairball right on that spot, so I'd have to put things through the cycle again! The cat gave up the ghost last year, but they got a puppy instead ... so there is still an omnipresent hazard (piddle, hair -- and the dog following me into the garage and either biting me on the rear end when I'm getting stuff out of the machines, or suddenly deciding to grab a pair of my undies and make a run for it).

needs to be washed/dried/hung/ folded/put away/ironed

my house really has no good place for clothes hampers either, the staging area for the dirty laundry. I recently bought a new laundry sorter to assist with this issue. It has helped some.

I still hate it.

But not as much as when I had to go to the laundromat ugh .

I used to go to this laundromat in Cambridge that had like 14 washers and 2 dryers, and a spouse who did not want to wait until the towels were dry before leaving the laundro mat. I should have just let him use the damn sour towels. ick.

170. Several loads a day? With all due respect, how?? Towels are clean
after a shower, so why wash them every day (presumably, you're clean after a shower). Just train each person to hang their towel up (and keep track of which one is theirs) (easier said than done, I know).

OK, if you have 4 children under 10, maybe. If they're older, start training them to do the laundry!!
