Just found out that my oldest son, who moved out, comes over at night ...

Its not like he's hurting for money. He makes $18.75 an hour, plus his inheritence from his grandmothers trust and shares an apartment with 3 roomates.
He gets bored and comes to my place, when I'm asleep, and eats.
This guy is 24 years old too.

As does his roomates. So now its all coming together. They eat EVERYTHING and when the cupboards are bare, he raids my provisions.
I have my two youngest sons here mind you. Tonight was Tostada night and when I went to gather the ingredients, two cans of refied beans, tostada shells, two avocados and 8 oz of sour cream are gone!

No kidding ... my folks came by one morning and put some cheese in the fridge ... and by the time I came home at 5, it was all gone! Devoured by 20-year-old girls (who are at least as ravenous as guys). The 15-25 age group seems to be particularly insatiable. (I'm not too old to be unsympathetic.)

Possibly there are issues with his housemates about grocery-shopping, whether certain people are reluctant to chip in, etc.? And a little questioning would soon bring this out, if there is a problem. (I'm not saying parents shouldn't give their kids food, but if the exchange is one-sided, if there's a lot of it -- and the timing isn't convenient -- and if it's mostly going to somebody else, I don't think it's out of line to inquire.

Tell him to consider it a valuable economics (and human relations) lesson.

I, forgive me, am feeling a little verklempt. My eldest is in NYC for a show choir competition and I realized that this is what it will be like in two years when she goes off to college.

I really, really miss her. She is often, no, most of the time, a complete PITA, but I really, really miss her.

I was about his age when I made a serious effort to cut the cord, by moving 3 time zones away! My folks were kind of braced for it, because I started out by living at home during college, but working up north for extended summers. And then I did my graduate degree at a school more than an hour away. They laughed because I came home every weekend for the first couple of months ... then one weekend a month after that ... and eventually, only for holidays and birthdays ... they knew what was happening!
