But ocassionally I try to contribute my part by researching something that DUers might care about and posting LBN or GD threads on the topic.

There are actually lounge dwellers who give absolutely no indication that they are liberal, progressive, or smart. :D And they've never ventured out of the lounge to sharpen their nails or their wits--which I think is necessary on ocassion. It's GOOD to be pissed off once in awhile. It's GOOD to enter a debate and have to research your position.

And GD isn't the only other forum at DU. There are many liberal-related discussion groups at DU in which the nasty GD battles don't occur.

I see nothing wrong with socializing with smart liberals in the lounge. I just can't understand how anyone can spend all of their time at DU in the lounge.

I used to love to read GD threads started by brilliant people, respond to them there, and then see them post some silly something in the Lounge, where I'd then see the humorous side of them. THAT's what made community.

I spend most of my time in the Lounge because I come here to unwind. I spend every day studying shit like international relations, political theory and history. If someone sends me a link to a GD thread, and I have something to say that hasn't already been said, I'll say it (I jumped into the fray a little with the whole death penalty debate and a few other things). Occasionally I'll read GD or GDP on my own, but these days, I'm just looking to be entertained, and the Lounge fits the bill quite well.

But I wonder if some of the most social butterflies in the lounge even have a social "real life." In other words, "the lounge was invented so that people who have no friends in real life can be popular, too." Seems that in an attempt to form cyberfriendships, one could overlook the opportunity to make REAL friends in one's REAL location--which is much more healthy than having 100 cyberfriends.

Having said that, I have made some friendships in the lounge--and there are many good people here. But I wouldn't ever neglect my homies to post in DU. If the choice is a crawfish boil with 20 of my home buds, or posting on DU (and organizing snipes at other DUers), I'm going to suck some heads! :D

God it's cleansing to get this out. I've been wanting to say it for ages.

I have another question: Why do people on Xanga and other blogs always post a profile photo in which they held the camera over their head, and they roll their eyes up, to look at the camera, so that the only thing you see in the photo is the top of the heard and bulging eyes? Guess it is growing pains of being a much larger community then 'back in the day', because way back when - the lounge was mostly benign - not often hostile - though prone to episodic hissyfit/blowups at that time GD was generally combative, snarky and ... well... not always benign. Sometimes these days - it feels as though the tenor of the fora toggle back and forth... as in GD can be welcoming and supportive while the Lounge is snarky and exclusive, and then flip a switch and the opposite is true.

75. Have spent lots of time in both places over the years

and the lounge used to be an odd but warm/welcoming place - and GD was a blasting fireflamefest. The flames are fewer on GD these days, but the insults mixed in with the fights are in the open, and there are a whole lot more discussions rather than just flamefests - for now. The lounge - much more of a gauntlet than it used to be - but it is as if the path and the bombshells are more like mines, invisible to the eye. Long way of saying... "agree."

It took me a few months to make my first post in the lounge, I really didn't know it was here. I think it is fine if people only want to post here and spend time reading the other areas of DU and not posting in the other forums.

But in saying that, I have to admit that I have personally questioned why people have 30,000 posts or something and I never see them in the other forums. I don't really care if they do, but I get curious as to why they don't get involved with some of the "political" discussions here.

I don't think that anyone should leave though.

I do tend to stay in the Lounge for long periods of time, sometimes even going a couple of months between GD visits.

As to why anyone would do this, or post exclusively in the Lounge, it's just knowing one has friends with similar political beliefs. Every other public socially-oriented website has Bush lovers and conservatives roaming around; it's nice to have a safe haven of liberals to turn to, even if it's only for socializing.

Although their political alignment is solidly liberal, either a)they don't have the courage or intestinal fortitude to withstand the constant gratuitous flaming that goes on there, or b) they don't consider themselves smart or educated enough on the issues to make any kind of serious statement without fear that someone will make fun of them for their relative naivete.

Some of them simply don't have much to say, and would rather let the more eloquent members of DU do the talking for them. I don't blame them. There's some really brilliant posters in GD and GD:P.

Or they use DU's "adult" forums to glean info and get educated on the issues of the day, but post in the lounge because that's where they're most comfortable.
