Cows - smart, beautiful, amazing - wow.
Edited on Sat Apr-01-06 09:00 PM by Skip Intro

A cow contentedly chewing her cud may look like she doesn’t have a care in the world, but there’s a lot going on behind those big brown eyes. Cows are as diverse as cats, dogs, and people: Some are bright; others are slow learners. Some are bold and adventurous; others are shy and timid. Some are friendly and considerate; others are bossy and devious. According to organic farmer Rosamund Young, author of The Secret Lives of Cows, cows “can be highly intelligent, moderately so, or slow to understand; friendly, considerate, aggressive, docile, inventive, dull, proud, or shy.”1

In addition to having distinct personalities, cows, according to recent research, are also very intelligent animals with long memories. Animal behaviorists have found that cows interact in socially complex ways, developing friendships over time, sometimes holding grudges against cows who treat them badly, forming social hierarchies within their herds, and choosing leaders based upon intelligence. They are emotionally complex as well and even have the capacity to worry about the future.2,3

Researchers have found that cows can not only figure out problems, they also, like humans, enjoy the intellectual challenge and get excited when they find a solution. Their big problem, of course, is that they’re being raised for slaughter, and just like all animals, they don’t want to be separated from their families, and they don’t want to die. So cows have been known to use their smarts to perform amazing feats, such as leaping over a six-foot fence to escape from a slaughterhouse, walking seven miles to reunite with a calf after being sold at auction, and swimming across a river to freedom....

a lot more:

I waver on the idea of eating meat, and went veggie for a year but regardless of all that the animals should be treated more humanely even if they ~are~ raised solely for consumption

10. Of course not.
So, in my lowered expectations, I would also suggest that the posters would also not expect otherwise than to receive responses in kind. I hope posters don't run to the "but I was joking" bullshit line when called out. Hey, shit on a post, expect it to blow back.

I applaud (not that it matters) your stance on the treatment of animals that are raised for food. I wish we all had such a mindset.

20. And to think that being a Democrat once meant that it was our
responsibility to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. To feel compassion for those who suffer, no matter what species they are. Once we stood for the very best qualities humanity can have; now it seems we're slipping quickly into the "got mine-fuck you" mindset of the other side.

It's very sad.

While South American cattle ranches contribute to the cutting of the rain forest, North American pig farms contaminate our environment. Pools of fecal matter contaminate ground water, streams, and rivers. Fish and local animals sprout sores on their bodies. It's really quite disgusting.

Allowing for the expoitation of those considered stupid has contributed to some of humankind's nastier behavior. It's really not a morally defensible position.

126. "Is there a humane way to kill an animal
years before it's time, simply to eat it?"

Yes there is.

You seem to have a problem comprehending the difference between humane treatment of food animals and YOUR personal choice not to eat meat. I, and many others, agree that much of the current mega-factory method of food production is both unsustainable and inhumane.

However, that does not equal your viewpoint that eating meat in itelf is those things. THAT is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. I don't think anybody is trying to force or even encourage you to eat meat. Your attitude, on the otherhand, comes accross as superior, especially when you use terms like "morally indefensibe". Your words tell people that your choice makes you better than others. That is one reason some people react with snark and defensiveness. People don't react well to being told they are amoral or cruel. Especially when they are neither.

Yes, educate them on the benefits of eating healthier, yes educate them on the realities of factory "farming" but please allow yourself and others to be educated on moderate alternatives to those problems in addition to the extreme choice you have chosen. Try using some qualifiers when you make statements about handling, processing and the environment. Likely there will be much more progress towards solving the problems we are ALL concerned about than by preaching from a holier than thou pulpit.

That said, would it be safe to say that if "my people" didn't allot these qualities to animals that you'd then stop eating them? I mean, that's what you're suggesting...

You can still have compassion and stand up for those WHO (that generally means a PERSON) cannot stand up for themselves at the same time eat meat. And you can eat meat without causing suffering. The two are NOT mutually exclusive.

I think it was a bit of bait that got taken don't you? I mean yeah the reactions are a bit snarky, but it IS the lounge and the post is a little over the top with the emotional overkill. I would love (and started to till I read the whole thing) to talk about cows and how they ARE - I raise them, love them and am fascinated by them. But that wasn't really what the post is about is it? Its about manipulating emotions and trying to change behavior with guilt. And it was posted in the lounge - isn't there a veg forum? Or an animals-should-have-equal-rights-as-humans forum? (sorry the snark does slip out occasionally with me too)

Just pointing out to those who seem overly sensitive to the snark that it might be safer there. I have no problem with the discussions, only with misinformation, distortions and such.

Of course my REAL point (that you may have missed) was my opinion that the post was a bit of flame bait anyway. There are much more neutral sources for a post on cow beauty and behavior than those cited. Interesting how the OP never came back to the conversation.

That's so cool to read about their personalities and intellect. Many, if not most, people would not even think about cows in that way. It's the same with birds. They are quite intelligent and each has his or her own personality, quirks, etc. When one has the opportunity to get to know some birds, it's quite eye-opening and wonderful.

21. Every wild and domestic animal I've ever known is a unique individual
I have lots of raccoons living in my backyard, and man, do they have distinct personalities! Some are so foul that I've had to move them with havaheart traps, others are sweet and loving-even with cats, possums, and other animals. Some are just plain goofy; one would run up a sapling, hold on to the end and start to bounce until he got himself going enough to catapult himself across the backyard. He'd land with a crash...then run back to the sapling and do it again! Insane beast. :-)

I'd suggest to be damning on it's face such a statement about cows from the "Cheese State."

Now, if you're talking about the life of a calf in Wisconsin, I'll have to darken the doorstep of one of the veal calf confinement warehouses and get back to you.

So, to back up your post, prove that

1. Cows are stupid;
2. Cows lack certain human qualities and/or characteristics;

For a bonus question, can you prove the non sentience of a cow?

BTW, go take a bite out of a live cow, in a field, and...never mind. You have enough work to do.

I eat meat. I don't feel I need to antagonize or mock vegetarians. Many believe the mass production and slaughter of animals is cruel..again, even though I eat meat, I don't disagree.

And yeah there's fun to be had and snark to be made, but it's a guarantee that if someone has closely held beliefs about being a vegetarian, they will be antagonized here. Witness the very first post on this thread and all that followed.

72. I raise cattle and can confirm some of this. And some is BS (no pun inten
ded)

They form social groups too, or at least some do - often several generations of mother-daughter-grandaughter sorts. Others never seem to be with the same "associates" at all. They show breed differences in temperment and inteligence as well. I've seen our Longhorns do some amazing things. I once watched a grand old girl pick up the side of an old bathtub that had been used as a feeder. She slipped the tip of one horn under the bottom and lifted. What was so amazing was she didn't do it to move it out of the way so she could get to the goodies underneath. She lifted it and held it up while ANOTHER cow got the goodies. Fascinating beasts. I love them. But I can still eat them.

However "worrying about the future"? Guess I will have to read the links. The rest sort of sinks back to the typical peta-like twisted hyperbole that really gets on my nerves. For instance a cow that "escaped" from a slaughterhouse most likly would have "escaped" from ANY situation where she was crowded into a small pen - even to be fed or reunited with a baby. Some animals for whatever reason, sometimes past trauma, sometimes I really do think it is just a personality thing, do NOT like small spaces - sort of like some people don't. These animals will ALWAYS jump out of a small pen. (or tear the hell out of it trying) Doesn't mean they have a clue they are about to be killed.

Most COWS are NOT being raised for slaughter, although most male calves are and yes most end up going eventually, but most beef cows are being raised to have more calves. They tend to live pretty ideal lives, for the most part. Even in this day of factory farming.

"they don’t want to be separated from their families, and they don’t want to die. " This is the kind of emotionally manipulating nonsense that irritates me and turns a lot of people off of the message. Putting animals on the same plane as humans is offensive to me. Especially when there are hurting, sick, hungry human beings in the world. Would't it be better to help them first?

Worrying about humane treatment is one thing - putting food animals on the same level as people is another.

107. You make some good points.
I wouldn't put cows on the same level as people, but they do have feelings. That much is true. I agree with you that people need help first and I appreciate your insight into this topic. I have struggled with it for years. I have tried vegetarianism. I couldn't afford to do it and still stay healthy. I just couldn't handle it. One day someone pointed out to me that even animals eat other animals. It's the way of carnivores and omnivores. Your post has stated quite clearly the fact that a person can appreciate the intelligence of an animal and still be a meat eater.

I do hate it when DU'ers get into intense flamefests over topics like this. May I make a suggestion that if this topic is your (meaning anyone reading this) "hot button," please try to take any jokes made with a grain of salt and realize that there is nothing gained by arguing with your allies and just move on.

Thanks to the OP for a thoughtful interesting OP.

74. Animals with the cloven hoof are meant to be human food
That includes deer, elk, antelope, and yes, cattle.

I agree that every animal has it's own unique personality.
After all, I'm the human companion of 3 cats.

But-cats aren't food. Cattle are. Yes, they're beautiful.
But to me, cattle are what deer are to a cougar-food.

Sorry about the reality check, but we human are part of
nature, too.

121. "Animals with the cloven hoof are meant to be human food"

I am not familiar with that rule. Can you cite your source of authority, please?

"But-cats aren't food. Cattle are."

I'm afraid you are wrong. In some cultures, cats are food. Dogs, too. Then again, in other cultures cows are sacred and you may be put to death for harming one, much less eating it. So positions regarding which animals are "okay" to eat (as opposed to others) are based primarily on myopic convenience (self-interest) and the ignorance of equally valid but opposing facts.

"But to me, cattle are what deer are to a cougar-food"

Then how about you make like a cougar and kill your cattle they same way they kill their prey... with your own two hands and teeth? Do you think you could do that? And how about you eat your meat the same way they eat theirs...raw, and still warm from the killing? You can't, and here's why: Cats are obligate carnivores and designed as such. They will go blind and eventually die from heart disease if they don't eat meat. Humans are not obligate carnivores, and live very healthy lives eating no meat. You can't compare yourself to an obligate carnivore and say the justification for eating meat is the same. That's just silly.

distance my self as far as possible from some of the other meat eaters here.

i find most animals to have remarkable intelligence and coming from a farm family i've seen wonderful and marvelous intelligence in cows.

i don't know why it's sooo hard for some people to figure out that dog smarts or cow smarts -- are not the same as our smarts -- they are not stupid.

and i've known cows to worry -- just like i've known dogs or cats to worry.

i want to see the meat industry overhauled completely -- chickens, pigs cows whatever.

it can't be done as an ''industry'' -- it's demeaning and horrifying -- and we should be far more conscious
of what we're about.

but i feel the same about all farming period.

It's true they will often eat each other alive, if they see a raw wound, but they seldom hold a grudge against their flockmate they've killed. It's also true the roosters are somewhat territorial and will kill each other, but at heart they are generous, helpful creatures, just like Foghorn Leghorn in the cartoons. :sarcasm:

The behavior described as intelligent is "signaling" to other cows where a food source is.
