Seriously. Gee - could I be stereotyping here? I'm sure the jackasses who hacked Tek Jansen are REALLY in their mid-40's, with stable jobs and families. I mean, if they had a choice between solving world hunger and proving to the world that the php website protocol has a security vulnerability, I KNOW they'd choose the more important cause. :eyes:

2. LOL! There's this "underground" population of young hackers.

They're called white hat hackers. They move around the internet and hack sites with security vulnerabilities just a to "prove a point" to the site manager that their site protocol is vulnerable.

It's really ridiculous. They can't simply send an email or alert the site manager that there's a problem - they have to hack it, post a sign on the site with some kool-d00d graphic telling the world what a chivalrous hacking vigilante they are. It's all about ego and immaturity.

There's also black hat hackers. They do the same thing, but actually go so far as to erase data or do something destructive to the site.

Both white hat and black hat hackers are illegal. I hope they get turned in.

I like going to tekjansen. If you're a fan of Stephen Colbert like I am, you may have heard of his phony space opera book "Stephen Colbert's Alpha Squad 7: Lady Nocturne - A Tek Jansen Adventure." Some guy decided to actually write chapters of the book. It's hysterical! And I go to the site once in a while to lighten up. Tonight, I found this hacker crap.

The odd type-face is in an internet style call D00d. It's scriptkiddie crap. 18-20 year-olds with big egos and too much time on their hands sometimes type like this.

I'm aware, in a vague sort of way, of what you wrote about. I don't have a tv though so I've only seen a couple of episodes of Colbert's show and as a result I didn't pick up the "Tek Jansen" reference.

"Teh" whole leet speak crap drives me absolutely berserk when I run into it on other forums though.

My professional hacker husband (aka software engineer) told me about this after I saw what they did to Tek Jansen.

13. I wouldn't consider these guys white hats

If you can consider them hackers at all. More likely, they're just script kiddies. But if they really did find the security exploit on their own, I'd consider them black hat, or at least grey hat. They did damage to the site.

A pure white hat may snoop around for a security hole, but as a rule, they don't cause damage, or even modify things, if they find an exploit -- they'll notify the people concerned with the hole. Where white hats may get shifty is when they release the details of the exploit into the wild, but still, as a rule, they themselves have not done the damage. Usually white hats don't even release the exploits unless the other party is completely unresponsive.
