Hooking up a washing machine

Not rocket science right? In order to move the washer, I disconnected the hoses on both ends, the faucet and the washer. When it was hooked up again last night by my daughter and her boyfriend, there's water going everywhere even though the connections are tight.

Besides new washers, any suggestions? Is it possible the hoses are connected wrong - meaning there's a faucet end and one for the washer itself? I'm not usually this inept...

1. Washers and plumbers tape. You HAVE to wrap the threads with the white

plumbers tape. Otherwise, with that much pressure, you will have leaks.

3. I prefer the teflon pipe dope.....

I have a hard time keeping that dang tape in place while making the connections.

2. Did you hook up the drain hose?

And did you use teflon tape on the threads of the faucets and tighten them with channel-lock pliers?

7. Did the o-rings in the hose ends look ok?

Gotta have the o-rings. Other than that, the plumbers/teflon tape is another possibility.

Where exactly is it leaking from? Is it the connection or maybe another part of the connection? Lots of failures occur other than the immediate connection.

9. Failure seems to be on the washer side

the o-rings have grooves from the previous connection. I'm sure now they don't fit the new one. I'll replace them all and add the tape and try again tomorrow night. Did I mention there's also a hole in the dryer vent as it leaves the house? Duct tape to the rescue for that one!

8. Tomorrow at lunch

new washers for the connections and tape or teflon dope. I'll connect it again tomorrow night and see how it works. I've lived in 7 states since I was 22 and hooking up a washer has never been a problem. :shrug:

12. I had a HORRIBLE time hooking up my washer too. It is a T connection

designed to hold both a dishwasher and washer off of one water connection.

I couldn't find the appropriate valve to simply close the connection I wasn't using. I had to buy a whole little hose AND a spigot to manually close the connection. It took days to figure it out! AND then it leaked and I had to find my teflon tape friend...

But dammit, this chick does plumbing AND electric!

I had a guy replace all the lights in my last house. Even though I did industrial electrics for years as a roadie, house electrics still freak me out.

13. Both ends are

like a garden hose connection? They should be. Are there 'rubber' washers in them? I never saw them use 'o' rings. They are normally square or rectangular in cross section. If they are 'o' rings lubricate them.

At any rate use Vaseline or even cooking oil on all sides of the washer. This is a compression fitting teflon tape is not necessary.

Do make sure you have the hot water hose to the hot side of faucet and washing machine.

It is also possible the packing gland on the faucet stems need to be tightend- a simple matter, or replacing not a simple matter.
