I know there has to be some more Allman Brother Band fans here at DU
They have such great, timeless music with the most unique sound. I was jamming to the GOLD CD which has all their greatest hits including a selection of live music.

So who else is a fan of the Allman Brothers?

3. I sure wish I was around back then.
And to think, they were the biggest rock band of their day. Who's the biggest band now? Nickelback or some crap like that.

4. And there was snow. They asked a little old man hobbling by...
...what year it was, and when the old man turned to answer, they saw it was Chuck Norris!

For fellow Allman fans, I can recommend the expanded Layla (box set), which contains hours of bonus jams and stuff.

7. Fan from the home of the Allmans and Capricorn Records, here.
That would be Macon, GA.

Though I was too young to go at the time, my older relatives tell me that whenever one of the band's members was busted for drug possession, the local judge would just order the band to do a free concert at Central City Park. Those were the days.

I wasn't of concert-going age until after Duane had died. I did see the remainder of the band, though, performing at the Fox Theater in Atlanta when I was in college.

Did you catch Gregg's and Dickey Betts' show at the Agora Ballroom? Late 70's.

Gregg was supposed to play at 9. We waited like happy puppies for him to show up, which he finally did by midnight. Someone helped him to the keyboard, he played 4 or 5 songs and promptly left.

I actually was close enough to touch Betts and only a few yards from Gregg. I was mad as hell that they couldn't play any more due to Gregg's inebriation, but I loved the Allman Bros so much, I forgave him.

"My songs are wide-awake dreams and wide-awake nightmares."

I missed too many great bands, though I saw plenty. The time went by too quick, as did the cash.
Their music brings back very clear memories of certain people and events. Nostalgic as hell right now.

I have been using that album to play along with for over 20 years! (I had it when in the early 70's, but i was a piano player, and didn't know how to play guitar in those days.) Since probably the early 80's, i started using that album as a fun way to practice.

So, i'll join the club!

I've been a fan ever since. I say them again in Greensboro in 1975 when I was in high school and once here in St. Louis about 10 years ago with all the new guys.

Always a great time. When I lived in NYC we would see them every March at
The Beacon Theater. They would own that house for most of the month. A good time was had by all, sometimes too much of a good time !

My most recent experience with them was last summer. I was off stage left for most of the show ! They are all clean and sober now, and they were flawless.

23. I saw them at Bonnaroo last year.
There were a couple highlights but I felt like they were mailing it in. Not too enthusiastic and not much like the original band. Both original guitarists are now gone. I'm a big fan so I was a little let down.

41. Geezer now, teen when they started
It was through Eric Clapton and then the Allmans that I discovered the blues and have been a devotee of that form ever since.

I was at the concert that became the Live at Fillmore record. In those days the Allmans were still up and coming so much so they weren't even the headliner that night. Johnny Winter was, if you can believe it. They didn't headline the Fillmore until those last shows that ended the Fillmore's run.

As good as that night was, they kept getting better and better right up until Duane's death. I saw them at their best at the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park in August '72 and again that September at the Capital Theater in Passaic, New Jersey. By that time had reached an otherworldly level. A month later, in October, Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident. I was as crushed as a 19 year old could be, the greatest slide guitarist of his generation was gone.

I saw them again about nine months later in NY and though there was a gaping hole in the music they still cooked. Then bassist Berry Oakley died about a year after Duane.

The last time I saw them was at Boston Garden in 1973 with Chuck Leavel on keyboard and some guy I can't remember on bass. It was probably the most depressing concert I ever attended. The crowd was going nuts the whole night oblivious to the fact the magic had completely evaporated. The band was just going through the motions and it was so disheartening to hear people who had never seen them before say what a great show it was. I basically gave up on pop music at that moment and started listening mostly to classical and jazz. I came back in the late '70s when Springsteen and then punk hit the scene and became a real Talking Heads junkie, but after 1973 I was only a pop dilettante. Now I'm just old.

I've heard the Allmans got a lot better, especially in the '90s. But I remember those '70s shows and don't want to be reminded of what once was.
But have you heard that new Derek Trucks CD, Songlines? The man plays a killer slide, he's like the second coming of Duane. He's Allman drummer Butch Trucks' nephew and now plays and tours with the Allmans as a side gig. Definitely worth checking out.
