What was the last full CD you listened to?
Rascal Flatts - Me & My Gang (on full album listening party) : I'm open to new country, but this CD is just so boring and safe. I never cared for them. C-

I'll give the edge to Twin Cinema because it's new.

I love Electric Version's hooks, and Twin Cinema brilliantly expands their style while keeping the basic sound.

141. The new version with the alternate "Flamenco Sketches"?
That always blows my mind, after so many years of listening to the original Columbia recording, to hear the other version of that tune! This album is part of my DNA, so hearing "Flamenco Sketches" (which was really just a framework for improvisation anyway, apparently with no written head) played with a different "melody" scrambles my synapses. But delightfully so.

142. Which is/are your favorite(s) of your 10 versions?
I love "Concerto for Orchestra" also, ever since hearing the Chicago Symphony recording (Fritz Reiner conducting) in my high school years. What a brilliant piece of music! Some people consider Bartok cold or too dissonant (generally the same people who think early 20th century music by Stravinsky is too far out), but for me his music is rich, beautiful, and deeply emotional.

Hi Klook. I presume you're also a jazz fan, having the same handle as Kenny Clarke, the drummer from Pittsburgh, who changed how drummers use the high hat cymbal. I love jazz. ... and folk music, blues, folk and world music. Be that as it may, here's what I think about the CfO.

I just bought Edward Van Beinum's 1948 performance with the Concertgebow Orch. backed with their Rites of Spring directly from Dutton for $7.99 delivered. Excellent performances and excellent transfers. They give the pieces their proper weight and rhythm emphasizing both the dramatic and the dance elements. The Bartok is alternately rousing and tender with the dances well played though not quite as weighty and furious as Reiner's. If I remember correctly, Penguin gives this version a rosette. An exceptional value.

The Reiner/ Chicago Symph. on RCA has more modern sound and the weightiest, and is the last movement, the most furious of any which serves the dramatic aspects of the piece quite well. I haven't heard the SACD of this though I did read that its more open even on redbook players. I believe that might be so from the three or four RCA SACD's I have.

The Bernstein on Sony owes a lot to Reiner. It's more tempered though not lacking in any aspect. Excellent throughout. He brings out the dance aspects perhaps best of the conductors I'm reviewing.

The Leinsdorf/ Boston Symph. an RCA HDCD, out of print, is, for me, the best balanced. Equally balletic as Bernstein's, slightly less weighed and furious than Reiner's though by no means lacking in perspective. Paired with an excellent version of Kodaly's Peacock variations.

The Solti/ London Symph. from 1965 on Decca is another great performance, also in wonderful sound, 96kHz/24 bits. Available from www.berkshirerecordoutlet.com for $3.99.

Also available from them for $5.99, the great Fisher/Budapest version which includes Three Village Scenes and Kossuth, the only disc not to pair the CfO with Hungarian Dances besides Leinsdorf. It's Grammaphone mag's favorite and a fine one it is, too.

Another favorite is Skrowacsewski with the Minnesota SO. Berkshire Outlet has them doing Bartok's complete orchestral music in a three disc set on Vox for $5.99. Excellent all around. Speaking of Skrowacsewski and the MSO, if you ever see their Daphnis and Chloe plus Mother Goose, produced by Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz, snatch it up. Musice, performance, sound, engineering all wonderful.

The Boulez on Sony has consistently earned praise from the critics over the years, and is now available on an SACD. In between Bernstein and Reiner more or less. Includes the Miraculous Mandarin.

So, for less than the price of a pizza with everything, you can have an instant Concerto for Orchestra collection and many happy hours of listening pleasure.

Of recommended ones I haven't heard, the Fricsay on DG Originals in good mono is one I'd pick up based on my liking of other of his works. Another is the Ancerl on Supraphon provided you get the somewhat shrill original, not the remaster. The Dorati on Mercury Living Presence is another favorite.

Thanks, Metta, for the in-depth report on these recordings! I will look for these performances and am eager to hear them.

You are correct, I am a jazz fan. See my post on Basie and Zoot elsewhere in this thread.

My handle is indeed a reference to the great drummer Kenny "Klook(-a-mop)" Clarke. I didn't realize he was from Pittsburgh! Same as the wonderful Art Blakey. Pittsburgh must be a pretty rhythmic town.

Looking forward to more of your writings. :hi:

165. Yeah, Zoot and Basie.
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 06:19 PM by Metta
I love Basie's early work with Lester Young and Herschel Evans though there are big band sides I like, too. I'm a big Zoot fan, myself. I especially like his work with pianist Jimmy Rowles on OJC. A special favorite of mine is his side with Jutta Hipp under her name though I don't find it to be all five stars. In the same vein, there's a *wonderful* Phil Woods session from this same period called Pot Pie, also on OJC, with the equally wonderful and much under rated trumpeter, Jon Eardley. And, of course, all the wonderful Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan with and without each other. Without hesitation, check out the dvd Last of the Blue Devils which is late footage of Basie, Jay McShann and Big Joe Turner sitting around their Kansas City union hall, reminiscing, drinking, telling lies and swapping tunes. Get spots with Charles McPherson and the Basie big band.

As far as Pittsburgh goes, it's been a good scene for a really long time. Not only Blakey and Klook, Billy Eckstine, Mary Lou Williams, Billy Strayhorne, Tommy and Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, Lena Horne, George Benson and some folks you may not have heard of like drummers Roger Humphries and Joe Haris who played with Horace Silver and Bird. Johnny Coles comes from just down the road, too. Bassist Dwayne Dolphin and guitarist Jimmy Ponder live here. Dave Budway recently left for New York and has been making a name for himself playing piano. These days, there isn't as large a scene since some clubs have closed.

For Concerto for Orch., Janos Ferencsik conducting the Hungarian State Orchestra on Hungaroton from 1981. Includes the Cantata Profana. Reported to have the most Hungarian flavor. Also of interest is the earliest recording, by the man who commissioned the work, Serge Koussevitzky with the Boston SO. A live recording from December, 1944. On Naxos Historical, unavailable in the US. I'm currently looking for these versions.

I love "Z", but am partial right now to "it still moves". I have some of their live shows and B sides I've been listening to as well....I can't get enough of them.

109. Although, of course, "No Answer" is not the title in the UK and
was never intended to be the title. It was supposed to just be an eponymous album. Apparently someone at the U.S. office of Jet/United Artist Records asked long-distance what the album title was and got no answer, so wrote that in the title column. That's what I've always heard anyway.

I just collected the complete The Move on CD, and have several of the ELO albums, intending to buy them all eventually.

I love the little ghost song. I sing at the top of my lungs in the car. badly. with the windows rolled up.

snip>

Little ghost, little ghost
One I'm scared of the most
Can you scare me up a little bit of love?
I'm the only one that sees you,
And I can't do much to please you
And it's not yet time to meet the lord above

The first moment that I met her
I did not expect a specter
When I shook her hand I really shook a glove
She looked into me so sweetly
And we left the room discreetly
No one else could know the secret of our love

And I'm not just saying that cause I'm from Illinois!

I was lucky enough to catch him in concert this fall. A sublime show.

His other albums are really good too. I think I might even actually prefer "Seven Swans" over "Illinoise" -- it's less orchestral, more of just Sufjan and his banjo, but the songs are spectacular.

at the grand old Wilma Theater in Missoula, MT.

The live stuff was great, but what really hit me were the soundstage vignettes, like the Staple Singers doing "The Weight" with Scorcese's revolving cameras.

And Levon Helm's endearing reticence: "I didn't think you were supposed to talk about the women."

Only released in 2004.

146. "Basie & Zoot" by Count Basie and Zoot Sims
Zoot Sims was (is still, I guess) Bill Clinton's favorite saxophonist. This 1975 small-group recording with Basie on piano and organ, Louie Bellson on drums, and John Heard on bass is a pure delight. Zoot burns white-hot with his unique sound (founded on Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins), and Basie is perfect as always, playing way much more piano than you typically hear from him. Wow!

This is the only time I've heard Sims and Basie together, and boy is it a treat! Several of the tunes are hard-swinging toe-tappers, and for that kind of music this is a dream band. And "I Surrender, Dear," with Basie on organ, is sweet, sentimental, and masterfully performed.

If you've only heard Basie's minimal piano playing with his big band (possibly the all-time swingingest group), you'll be surprised to hear his considerable chops on this recording. Still, though he strides like James P. and swings in the mode of his mentor, Fats Waller, there's a kind of restraint in Basie's playing. Even when he's dazzling you with ideas and his sparkling sense of musical humor, Basie never overplays or shows off.

This is quickly becoming one of my desert island discs.

197. Ok, I'll post one more - today's CD
Last one was Sonya Kitchell - Words Came Back To Me. She has a very mature voice for her age that sounds like a mixture of Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, and Natalie Merchant. She has an exquisite folk-jazz style that even allows for some good pop hooks! I highly recommend this CD.

200. Here are some others from recently, plus ratings
Toby Keith - White Trash With Money **1/2 /B- (I was intrigued by Lari White producing - and she helps make this CD sound better than his other recent CDs, but there's a bit TOO much in the way of strings.)

Shooter Jennings - Electric Rodeo *1/2/C- (instead of carrying on Waylon's legacy, he just sounds like a Big And Rich copy with worse lyrics)

The Vines - Vision Valley **/C (they play to the garage sound on this CD with lackluster results)

Placebo - Meds */D (one of the worst I've heard this year so far; they were better when they experimented - now they are just bad hard rock)

Blue October - Foiled ***1/2/A- (sometimes reminiscent of R.E.M., they also add some freshness to the modern rock genre)

The Sounds - Dying To Say This To You ***1/2/A (fun Blondie/Ace Of Base combo, with Cranberries-esque vocals & lyrics)

Morissey - Ringleader Of The Tormentors **/C+ (music sounds dated, giving his sometimes good lyrics less punch)
