My dog just cornered a baby squirrel

He bit half of his tail off (bone is still there):(
The baby is so small that he fits in the palm of my hand, scared, shaking.
Anyway, the dog is prowling the backyard for the scent.
I put the squirrel in a pet carrier until he loses interest.
I don't know where it came from.
Anyone know what squirrels eat?:shrug:

2. After 30 phone calls

and several hours of negotiating, "Cheetoh" is on his way to a rehabber.

I keep a wildlife rehabber's card tacked to my refrigerator just in case. I have squirrels, possums and chipmunks living all around me. Once my dog was trying to grab a baby bird. Its mother was trying to teach it to fly. I picked it up and called the rehabber, but she told me to put it back and Momma would eventually get it back to the nest.

9. Just an update

I had to drive Cheetoh 60 miles round trip last night and didn't get in until late.
The rehabber was a wonderful lady.
It was estimated that Cheetoh was in good health, he wasn't dehydrated.
He was given antibiotics for his tail and will be visiting the vet today to cut back the bone so that his tail can begin to heal.
In two weeks, if they determine that his climbing skills are adequate, and if he is eating good, and overall doing well, I will pick him up and turn him loose at the back of my property.
They like to try to bring them back to the area that they came from so as not to overload any area.
It was a great experience and I am thankful that there are people out there that do this.
