60's Air Raid / duck and cover drills - do you remember these?

ahhh the days of the duck and cover to protect us from a nuclear bomb!! Those kids towards the back are gonna get hurt - they're not completely under their desks!!

7. Yep.. .they started way before I started school

later in Calif they became drills for earthquakes which are definitely needed.

basically leave the classrooms and sit in the hallways!

And my desk was perilously close to the windows. School was near Offut Air Force Base (a major target at the time).

But that was a long time ago. Looking back it seems pretty silly - but then many things do from that era.

It's just been used in different ways through the years. The Red Menace. The Red Scare. Commies, commies, commies. And that has morphed into "terrists, terrists, terrists". I got bored with being scared. There are much better things to do with my time other than running around like the chicken with its head cut off.

5. I had them in kindergarten in '71 - '72

Only we had to leave the classroom, go to the auditorium, get up onto the stage, and stand facing the curtains. I never understood how that was supposed to protect us! :crazy:

In fact, I remember the day we had an air-raid drill and they sent us home. It was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. :scared:

Moved from Torrance to Mar Vista last year.. Have you eaten at the "New" Vietnamese Restaurant off Carson and Western? It opened last May just as I was moving, pretty good food, very good pricing..

I remember them in first and second grade. I also got in trouble for questioning the wisdom of diving under a desk to deflect a nuclear explosion. In second grade (Florida) I asked (seriously!), "Are these some kind of Super Desks with magic powers, or is the idea for us to cover our eyes and not see the blast coming?" I got sent to the office. Actually, I got sent to the office a LOT.

Also, Sputnick in 1958 or so and the Cuban missle crisis,1963.
