9. Not all of them are, but those -- I agree with you.
I like the really dark green ones they wear. And the bright yellow ones? Yick!

They're still my team though, even when they look like dorks.

10. Those aren't even the worst ones.
The worst were worn for the chokejob against Oklahoma last year. Fake diamondplate pattern on the shoulder and thigh pads.

Word is that players are consulted during the design process--which only goes to show that even college age kids can't necessarily dress themselves.

3. I haven't seen SI in ages
but I haven't seen the jinx fail many times.

Was Cade McNown ever on the cover, or did he just get the centerfold?

8. Got his shoulder cleaned out in September
And then decided his knee needed work...right before spring training.

Prior got an owie and is on the DL, too.

And...when you're a Cubs fan, you get used to it.

13. Well...there are advantages to being a Cubs fan...
1. We're loyal.
2. We're eternal optimists.
3. We're steadfast.
4. We're resilient.
5. We face adversity with strength and grace (all that practice, y'know)
6. We're lovable.
and, probably the biggest advantage of all...
7. We're not Cards fans.

20. The pain is mitigated by our 9 World Series titles
And the fact that the greatest defensive shortstop of all time wore a Cardinals uniform.

6. I kind of do...
whenever a sports star or team is featured on the cover of a certain magazine (a la Bode Miller on Entertainment Weekly) they get too cocky and lose.

That's what I feel.

7. At the beginning of college basketball season...
Michigan State was on the cover with a caption like "Going All the Way?" They were predicted to go to the Final Four and win the Big Ten. Neither happened - not even close.

12. Poor Donny Moore. 1986 Angels.
All season long he was automatic out of the bullpen, but couldnt hold that lead against my Sox in the ALCS.
Dewey Evans and Dave Henderson went long on him and that haunted him for the rest of his life when he shot himself.
The Ultimate baseball tragedy.

23. Oh, mav, it hurts me to see that you might actually believe the '86
AL series had anything to do w/ Donnie Moore's suicide. :(

But I still love you.

Sure, it had to hurt. But haunt a man for the rest of his life -- and lead to suicide? I was so angry when that was suggested. I'm not angry anymore (nor am I mad at you, not at all) but I thought that was the most stupid thing any baseball writer could say. Fortunately a few of them stood up and said "bullshit."

Baseball happens, man. Henderson was a monster. It was his day that day, not Moore's. Baseball just happens, and everyone who plays it knows it. Donnie Moore didn't kill himself because of a home run.

Sigh.

How do you feel about the Pads this year? How do they look? Me? I'm just glad Tim Salmon's on the roster! He's my boy.

:pals:

Exactly two days after the date shown on this SI cover, Laurence Owen, along with 17 other members of the U.S. Figure Skating Team, were killed in a plane crash near Brussels, while en route to the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships, which were to be held in Prague (they were canceled that year because of the crash).
