Sizing a pic from online for printing?
What's the best way to size an image for printing from the internet? I'd like to do it in a non-standard size 8x6. It sounds kinda simple, but I can't figure it out.

2. You'll have a tough time if you want to enlarge it.
Web images are very low resolution. Enlarging it will hurt the detail, and edges will become jagged.

3. Contact the owner of the picture and see if you can get a hi-res version.

4. Try Irfanview.
http://www.irfanview.com

It's free.

Then use irfanview's Image - Resize/Resample

Some of the resampling filters are pretty good.

It's not like the movies, you can't zoom in on details that simply aren't there, but you can fake it pretty well. You won't get jagged edges.

Also try out the various effects and plugins. If you can't get the resolution you want when you enlarge a small downloaded photo, you can easily turn the picture into some sort of digital artwork. I've taken images as small as 120 by 180 pixels and made something recognizable and worth looking at when printed at eight by ten inches.

Just play, and you can figure it all out. The interface is sort of geek, however.

Other than that, some of the software that came with your color printer or digital camera can probably do this too, and you may decide it's easier to use than irfanview.
