What's The Difference Between "Lead Moderator" and "Moderator"

Is this something new? Or has it been around for awhile, and I've just not been paying close enough attention.

Why "lead"? Although it's quite useful (especially in lead/acid batteries and fishing line sinkers) it's not a very attractive metal.

Why not have color-coded moderator levels? Or semi-precious jewels? (Diamond moderators and ruby moderators?) Or precious metals? (Platinum moderators, gold moderators, silver and bronze...)

Are the "lead" moderators more powerful than ordinary moderators? Do they have stronger veto-powers, or can they banish disruptors on their own (without getting a 2nd opinion)? --- Do they have secret meetings (like the 'Witches Council' on Bewitched)? Is it like a cabinet-level position to provide advice to the admins?

Inquiring minds want to know!

It was the deciding factor after the arm wrestling competitions didn't work out. It's not all wine and roses to be the lead mods - they have to organize the new term hot tub party. It's gonna be hard to top the going away hot tub party for the old mods. Can they handle the pressure? This remains to be seen.
