2. Clean water is a right, not a commodity
And I resist corporate efforts to turn it into such.

5. Excellent point Xema.....
....I remember when Al Gore was running for President, and he would talk about how important clean water was. A lot of people probably thought, "yeah, well, of course our water should be clean"...I don't think they were getting the gist of what he was saying. If you don't fight for clean water, you may have to end up paying for clean water....

27. Hey, Peggy -- and I'm thinking of you...
I drink tap water, too --

But it goes through the refrigerator filter system.

Not bad.

I also buy bottled water to carry around in my car, and when I'm on the radio or have the grandkids along.

Medication makes me quite thirsty.

Thanks for asking!

PS. My bandage comes off my hand tomorrow, then another five days and the stitches come out.

Hand surgery wasn't too bad!

8. Bad stuff
Distilled water is not good for drinking.

This subject came up on DU several years ago. A google search will explain why distilled water can be dangerous to one's health.

11. If you drink just distilled H2O for life
Its detrimental because its missing additives (like minerals) that actually makes undistilled water more healthy. The only use I know of for distilled water is for either surviving or chemical reactions.

13. So . . . .
Minerals that are in tap water cannot be consumed from other food sources?

What about the bad stuff in tap water?

Is the lack of minerals in distilled water more harmful than the presence of bad ingredients in tap water?

Need more information.

Thanks. :)

15. I've heard the same thing, many times.
But it has never been justified, scientifically. What ingredients are in tap water that cannot be had from other sources? This question has never been answered.

I heard an interview with the owner of Ozarka about twenty years ago. He said that when they distill water, the resulting aftermath is a black goo.

I think I'm going to start drinking distilled water. Minerals can be ingested from meat, beans, veggies, etc. . . . .

:)

16. Spring water has minerals
I always check bottled water to make sure it actually says spring water (and then specifies an actual spring!), not distilled or purified.

17. Beans, meat, legumes, vegetables and fruits have minerals.
Nobody is able to adequately explain why distilled water is allegedly "bad."

Flouride, anyone?

18. better than soda,
but then tests on bottled water have shown it is no safer and often worse than tap.

Distilled is good for humidifiers, batteries etc when you don't want minerals - I would say the best reason not to drink it is the energy used to produce it, although you CAN build your own solar still I suppose....

20. Dr Weil Drinks it.
http://www.drweil.com/u/QA/QA21181/

First of all, let me review for the record what distilled water is — it’s water that has been turned into steam so its impurities are left behind. The steam is then condensed to make pure water. The process of distillation kills and removes virtually all bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and other organic and inorganic contaminants. Once distilled, the water is as pure as water can reasonably be.

For reasons I don't understand, any number of myths — some quite extreme — have grown up over the years about distilled water. A quick Internet search today will take you to sites that put forth such views as "distilled water leads to early death." Nonsense. One claim holds that distillation removes all of water's beneficial minerals. While it’s true that distillation removes minerals as well as various contaminants from water, we don't know that the human body can readily absorb minerals from water. We get our minerals from food, not water. By one manufacturer’s estimate, you would have to drink 676 eight-ounce glasses of tap water in Boston to reach the RDA for calcium.

Your question as to whether distilled water leaches minerals out of the body reflects another persistent myth. While pure water helps to remove minerals from the body that cells have eliminated or not used, it does not "leach" out minerals that have become part of your body's cell structure. Neither does distilled water cause your teeth to deteriorate, a false claim made by a filter manufacturer looking to boost sales. As far as acidity goes, distilled water is close to a neutral pH and has no effect on the body’s acid/base balance.

I hope I've set your mind at ease. Distilled water not only isn't dangerous, it’s the purest form of water. It’s also the kind of water I drink.

Dr. Andrew Weil

24. Dr. Weil, wasting resources for his fancy drinking water.
It's great that he's promoting a product that takes large amounts of fossil fuels to create. Or maybe in his mind, the distillation takes place using magical properties and not by burning untold therms of natural gas (which is how it is made.)

Grow a huge beard and you can get away with anything.
