10. It's not that I didn't want to go, it's that I had to make choices.
If I have to choose between vacation in a city and vacation in the country where you hardly ever see a car - or a human - I'll choose nature every day. Maybe after we have moved and I'm surrounded by trees all the time I'll be better able to make a city trip :)

17. It is a city with alot of history
(especially the infamous defenestration.)
but I have the feeling it would just be another monstrous city to me, and I am not a big fan of monstrous cities. Although Frankfurt was kinda cool for a half hour stop.
The Czech republic annoys me anyway because the capitol of Norway used to be in the middle of their country and now it's not. Plus I prefer union to separation. Is the Czech republic part of EU? Is Slovakia?

And I wouldn't say Prague is a monstrous city. Berlin is or NYC, but not Prague :P

34. For me, any city with over 100,000 people
is monstrous.
Prague has about 1.5 million, perhaps more than Kansas City
According to Wikipedia:
"Prague is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Nicknames for Prague have included "city of a hundred spires", "the golden city", "the Left Bank of the Nineties", the "mother of cities", and "the heart of Europe"."

Czechia and Slovakia are both part of the EU, Czechia having joined on 1 May 2004. (I did some reading on Wiki which is where I learned of the name Czechia.)

48. Excellent choice, Praha...
I was there about 10 years ago and it is one of my favorite places in the world.

The food was the worst, but the people were the best. And the beer was excellent, abundant, and cheap. (Just make sure Pilsner Urqell is the real stuff, not the one they import from Germany-- the German one is perfectly good, of course, but just not the real thing.) And DO NOT let anyone in a bar buy you a shot of the local plum brandy. Trust me on that.

It's one of the great walking cities, with a thousand years of history and something interesting around every corner. (Don't be conned by all the Kafka folderol-- Kafka hated the place.)

Pay particular attention to the Opera House. The "new" Russian one, not the old one. It jumps out at you and is arguably the ugliest building on the planet-- a splendid example of the finest Soviet architecture and worth the shock of seeing it for the first time. That and the train station just added to the charm of the place for me, that the city could survive such esthetic assault on top of everything else it took.

I imagine the place has changed a lot since I was there, and must cost a fortune now, but it can't have changed much for the worse. The food couldn't possibly be any worse.

53. Then it will still be new to you, and...
you'll have a fantastic week exploring the place. The Astrological Clock alone is worth the trip.

I did my Christmas shopping in the porcelain and crystal shops, but I doubt the bargains are as good as they were. And even back then they had some Chinese stuff snuck in there.

Aside from the Czech "cuisine" which seems to consist entirely of greasy chicken or greasier pork, the only down note on my trip was the train ride back. I got a dirt cheap flight to Frankfurt, and took the train to Nurnberg and spent the night before catching the first AM train to Prague. Nurnberg is a nice place, and it was an easy trip down. On the way back, I took a train directly to Frankfurt and it was TEN HOURS on that train.

Never again 10 hours on a Czech train. Ever.

but I know what you mean with the trains. I remember the trains back in East Germany. Thank you, I can do without them.

Regarding the Czech or Bohemian cuisine. Well I have to admit I like it. Esp. the Knedleki (dumplings). But then my grandparents came from Bohemia (but they are German) and I have 1/8 of Czech blood in me :)

59. Forgot about the dumplings-- they are good...
didn't see much of that when I was there, though. Mostly unindentifiable bits of pork with a carrot and two string beans if I was lucky. Somehow, it seems any real Bohemian food got lost somewhere on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain. One of the guidebooks I had said that to a Czech food is simply something they stuff in their mouths to ward off starvation between drinking bouts.

Anyway, with all the travel there, the boom in restaurants should have really taken off by now, and good eats should be available, traditional or otherwise.

FWIW, Scotland is another of my favorite places, and the food there...

I was in Glasgow for 6 weeks during an internship. I love the people and the language. It is such a melodic English. Once I understood what they were saying that is
Now you can't really call it food what they have there. The British just have no good dishes. Except the cheese that is. And the whiskey :D

62. If you look hard enough...
there's good food to be had in Scotland, but it takes some work.

Once, I asked some Scots in Edinburgh where would be a good place to eat. They told me about Pizza Hut, a local Chinese place...

"No! I didn't cross an ocean for Pizza Hut. Where's some good Scots food?"

"Ach, we doona eat that shit. We go to Pizza Hut."

I found a few decent restaurants, though, and actually had some good meals. Just stay away from haggis, mutton, and those meat pies in the bars.

(And they are perfectly capable of talking the Queen's English when they want you to understand them.)

You've inspired me to take better care with my pictures of Paris. I have them in my journal, but I'm taking them out and separating them so they're not so cluttered.

I also enjoy your landscapes. There's one that's a perfect boat and dock. There's another I like of being on the inside of an opera house. I would be really proud of my collection if I were you! When I look at them I feel like I'm in a different place. nnns agrees with me.

74. Actually, I'll be in Europe this summer.
I'm going on a cruise ship with my parents(!), and we'll be seeing St. Petersburg, Russia, Amsterdam :smoke: and maybe even Germany.

:D

She is quite fond of visiting tombs and cemetaries.

Either way, in her opinion, they are both worth checking out.

My parents are there right now.

I don't think it will be a positive outcome. Last I heard, he had 90% blockage.
