1. Rega, Music Hall, VPI
all make great affordable tables. I just bought a new VPI myself about a month ago. It kicks ass.

If you are using a receiver with no phono input, you're looking at having to also get a phono preamp. After CD's took over, manufacturers stopped including phono stages in receivers. You can get one fairly cheap, but then you also have to get interconnect cables as well. Are you in the U.K.?

4. In US
The surround sound system does have inputs and I think an amp so in theory I could just plug it straight in?

7. If it has inputs labeled phono...
then you are set. More than likely a moving magnet type cartrige will do best in this situation. If you get a moving coil cartridge, I would make sure that it is of the high output type, otherwise you may have to turn the volume up to 3 o'clock just to get background music.

3. Sweet!
I just bought a VPI Scout about a month ago for $3700. I'll bet you spent more than that for this one, huh?

8. Actually, I built This One From The Kit, All Up Price About $ 1,800
including the cartridge.

Teres sells complete turntables though and some of them do go for thousands.

As an audiophile, this was the best investment I ever made in music reproduction. I don't know why I waited so long to acquire a good vinyl rig. A good turntable makes a good record a thing of beauty.

11. I've never heard of that brand before...
and I've been an audiophile for many years. It has a much thicker platter than mine does. It also looks like it has a larger drive motor assembly as well. The VPI Scout did catapult my system to a whole new level though. I really love it.

5. musiciansfriend.com has some nice turntables..
in their dj section. You can score a decent direct drive Stanton or Numark for under $200 US. Of course, there is no substitue for the Technics twelvies.

9. Unless you want the pricier model above for some reason
Edited on Sat Dec-06-03 02:24 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
a good ole Technics 1200 direct drive is my recommendation. Sturdy, sounds good and easily available cartridges everywhere on the planet.

Goes for anywhere between 7-800 bucks

14. Not sure
I got a turntable made by a British company called "Heybrook". It probably weighs around 60-70 lbs and it has a Linn tonearm. I just remember when I was looking for turntables I looked at a Linn and it was a little over my budget, but they were very well made. I thought I had the name close. Maybe not.

15. More than likely, it was the Sondek
A fully decked out one with all the upgrades can run as much as $5700. I used a Linn Basik (stripped down version of the Sondek) for 10 years and just recently sold it to a friend when I got the VPI Scout. The Sondek has been around for ~35 years and can still hold it's own against most any 'table out there today.
