I just watched the most original movie in a long time:The Hitchhiker's
Guide To The Galaxy.Based on Douglas Adams's work.Wow! It's a bit like a Monty Python's
movie.Really weird. It could have been directed by Terry Gilliam but without the pessimism.
A very refreshing movie.Really unpredictable.I recommend it to anyone who likes absurd and wonderful movies.

1. hmmm
"without the pessimism"

Interesting take on a movie that starts with the destruction of Earth. :)

I agree though that it was a good movie, it mostly stays true to the spirit of the books although it could've used a bit more of Adam's pessimism I think.

2. I hope it had Adam's unvarnished sarcasm...
Wouldn't be the same without it.

22. that is so funny
because I read those books in college and never realized they were pessimistic. I still don't.

I only found that reference in the DU archives in Plaid Adder's review of the movie. Nihilistic? Really? Somewhat like Candide?

I just do not see it. It takes a bizarro cosmic point of view, but nihilist? Maybe the fifth book "Mostly Harmless". I did not like that one. Maybe its purpose was so Adams would not have to do any more sequels, kinda like the way they ended the show Family Ties.

3. I haven't seen it, but I can't help but wonder....
How could they compress all the significant events into less than two hours, and still make it reasonably true to the book? I mean, the radio series was 20 hours, and the TV miniseries was 12!

10. Original? You're stoned. It's based off of a tv show, based from a book,
which was based off a radio show.

If I can think of anything less original, I'll let you know.

21. once in grade school
I made a Valentine's box that looked like an Abraham Lincoln hat. I made it from an oatmeal container, an ice cream lid and black construction paper. It won an award for most original :bounce: :woohoo:

Cracked me up, because I had gotten the idea from

Captain Kangaroo.

20. I suppose it could be called original
since it deviates so much from the book :nuke: :nuke:

I have not hated a movie so much since Matrix II.

Anybody wanna used DVD?

23. It bored me
Love the books, had high hopes for the movie, and was disapoitned. Sure it had some good parts, but just wasn't as laugh out loud funny as the book was. So much of Adams humor comes from his use of language, and it just doesn't translate to the screen. Especially when you have to trim dialog left and right in order to reasonably tell the story, and end up leaving out even more funny stuff.

I don't blame them though. Definately a good effort to fit it into 2 hours, but I just don't think it's possible. Even the miniseries wasn't good enough, imho. It's just tough material to adequately portray on film.
