The Ten Spot is the new buck.....
I was driving around yesterday, far from COSTCO, my usual refueling point, when I noticed I didn't have enough space between E and where the needle was pointing to make it back...

I felt like Bruce Willis in Armegedon....

Anyway....

There I was, wondering which overpriced gasoline station I should stop in for a couple of bucks worth....

But I figured I would need about three gallons....

Prices being what they are, I just arbitrarily settled on 10 bucks...

A ten spot....

After the gas whooshed in for about thirty - thirty five seconds, it was all over....

I noticed I had a little more than a quarter tank...

Enough to make it through the rest of the day....

Safely...

And so, I remembered back about 30 years ago....

Back when I first started to drive...

I use to get a quarter tank for about a buck....

30 years...

Gas is ten times more....

Imagine that.....

Back then, minimum wage was about $2.65 an hour....

Now it is $5.35...

About double...

And yet, gas is ten times more expensive....

1. Irony of Ironies, is that the new 10 dollar bill has "We the People"...
...in red ink on the front of it. I got a good belly laugh when I first saw that one....

3. at this rate it will soon be not worth the paper it's printed on
I was thinking the same thing last time I filled up
I remember back in the day when it was 28 cents a gallon and at that time I think minimum wage was like about a buck fifty...you do the math...

doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that it sucks

6. It's absurd.
Tonight, I put $10 in my Jeep (I know, I know...but it was a free Jeep and I can't afford to buy a car right now). So I then went to Madison, NJ (about 15 miles from where I live). On the way back, my gas light was already going on.

My tank was on empty when I filled it, and $10 didn't even bring it to 1/4 of a tank. It's absurd.

7. I think it is 5.15 actually. I remember when 20 bucks was more than
enough to fill a car... and I started driving about 15 years ago!

I have a small tank, too. 12 or 13 gallons, I think.

12. what's going to happen when it really costs too much to live?
For me, it pretty much already does, but that is partly a consequence of living in dc, where my rent has basically increased by about 350% over the past six years, with no real corresponding increase in pay (well, and a bunch of other circumstances that I won't get into)...but it seems like, between gas prices and every thing else that raises the cost of living, everyone is going to be in the same situation pretty soon. What then?

14. OK, nostalgia: 0.25 a gallon, AND...
TWO guys came to the car.
One pumped the gas and the other checked under the hood and washed the windshield.
Then they checked the air in the tires.
If you weren't in a big hurry, they'd wash ALL the windows.
When you paid, you got a free glass with your choice of either the U. of Ala. or Auburn logo on it.
We had a whole set of the Alabama glasses.
Shit, I'm old.
;-)

15. Everything else is 10 times more expensive too
And if we rais the minimum wage to correspond with it, then the corporations will raise their prices just as much, if not more, to cover the difference and still make corporate windfalls. This is why I don't favor raising the minimum wage as a fix for our economic problems-it will only work for so long, and until we deal with the problem of corporate officers making gigantic salaries while at the same time cutting production and demanding corporate welfare, we're just chasing our tails.
