Poll question: Do You Call Your Aunt or Uncle By Their Name, Or By "Aunt" or "Uncle"...

... *before* their name?

Do you tend to use the formal "Uncle Henry" and "Aunt Sally"... or just a casual "Henry" and "Sally"?

1. My mom's side is way more formal than my dad's side...

Aunt Margot and Uncle Phil get titles; Jay and Karla don't. Although as I was growing up, they were all Aunt (or Auntie) and Uncle.

2. With My Parent's Siblings... It's Just Their First Names. But...

... with my grandparent's siblings, it's the more formal Aunt Gladys & Uncle Vernon, etc.

3. I only have one left, but I always called my dad's sisters

by their names, and the husband of my married aunt by his name, never aunt or uncle. My paternal grandfather's sisters had nicknames.."Sister" and "Catchie"..

I had a great aunt on my mother's side who ORDERED us NEVER to call her "Aunt Pollye", just Pollye was quite fine, thank you very much. She was such a hoot to be with anyway.

My mom's stepbrothers were both called by their first names too, as were their spouses. They were just in high school when I was a baby though.

The other aunts and great aunts and uncles were all addressed as aunt or uncle though. My grandmother had 6 brothers and sisters!

4. I don't have any aunts or uncles

Both of my parents were only children. Then, when my father remarried, his second wife was an only child, too.

My kids, however, use both 'Auntie Kim' and 'Aunt Kim' (two aunts named Kim). But they always use the relationship.

5. I grew up calling of them Aunt or Uncle before their name.

And now, even in my dotage, I call all of them on my mom's side by aunt and uncle (name), and some of them on my dad's side. Some on my dad's side I now just call by their first name.

But then, I still call my high school teachers and my friend's parents by "Mr." and "Mrs.", even one's I've known for 25+ years.
