HOUSTON (AP) - A plastic surgeon accused of running over two British women and driving away as they lay bleeding on the roadside was convicted Monday of assault while intoxicated.
The sentencing phase of Mark Douglas Gilliland's trial began later in the day and would continue Tuesday. He faces up to 10 years in prison on the two charges.
Prosecutor Warren Diepraam said Gilliland didn't stop to help the women after the March 2005 incident because he knew he was too drunk to be driving. Joanna Moore's skull was fractured in the crash, and Amanda Holland's jaw and ankle were broken.
Both sides agreed Gilliland had alcohol, a prescription sleep aid, a diet drug and an anti-depressant in his system at the time of the accident. But defense attorney Dick DeGuerin said the women stepped into the path of Gilliland's car.
Gilliland was arrested by an off-duty police officer who noticed he was driving erratically, speeding and that his windshield had been smashed, prosecutors said. In 2004, he had been charged with driving while intoxicated in a Houston suburb but pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was fined $200.
