I'm looking for new music to listen to

Looking for something different, stuff along the lines of Dream Theater or Glass Hammer (or maybe just different). Was browsing Best Buy this evening and came across these - ever heard of them? And any recommendations?

1. A Perfect Circle

is excellent, to say the least. Either of their albums would be a great choice!

3. Good tastes...

The band that I know the most from that list is A Perfect Circle. Maynard, the singer, described them as "Tool for your little sister". They are good, but i get bored after a while of listening. Blackmore's Night is good stuff though. If you are into medieval rock like some Jethro Tull and Gentle Giant, then you should like Blackmore's Night.
Of course, I recommend Tool heavily, and of course Jethro Tull and Gentle Giant. I also strongly recommend Rush if you don't already listen to them.

4. The new Liz Phair is horrid....

I used to be a big fan back in the day but she obviously felt that she was getting old and needed money. As a result, she recorded a cd that appeals to the teenage crowd. Trash.

5. It Might Not Be Your Cup of Tea,

but I'm completely immersed in the new Steely Dan release, "Everything Must Go." I've played it about 50 consecutive times in the car CD, to be point where my daughter says I shouldn't be allowed to own one. I keep hearing new things, and it's just gotten better.

The first couple of times the music sounded flat, but the wonder is all in the interstices and middle bits. Donald Fagan brings some of the best jazz sidemen into the studio and gives them an enormous role in his songs. His lyrics are just as biting and funny as ever, including the picture of a dissolute bankrupt company in the title song.

With all the bands out there, I still haven't heard anyone else do what Becker and Fagan do.

6. WHOA!

You were looking at an Avantasia record?! Damn!

I'm kind of familiar with the last three. They're all technical metal bands. Nightwish in particular is pretty cool, and if I remember right has a female vocalist who sounds great.

I have an Avantasia record lying around somewhere... might have to give it a listen-to tonight (this morning).

7. Blackmore's Night is a Rock/Renaissance fusion group

Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night. Candice has a great voice.

If so, you must check out the 5UU's or Cheer-Accident for music in the progressive rock vein.

For more accessible rock, The Wrens are fantastic (their new album, "The Meadowlands," is a masterpiece of melancholy power-pop) and Guided By Voices are THE rock band of the last ten years. If you don't know of them, you owe it to yourself to check 'em out.

9. Definitely A Perfect Circle

I saw them live twice. They opened for NIN on the "Fragility" tour. Apr. 15, 2000 in Columbus, OH and May 7, 2000 at the Star Lake Amphitheatre outside of Pittsburgh, PA. They put on a great show. I had seen Tool several times before, but this was a different vibe altogether.
