Can anyone tell me what this emoticon means?
L)

It was from a foreigner, so maybe he didn't know what he was typing.

2. My guess

He probably meant to do ":)" but accidentally clicked his ring finger instead of his pinky.

3. A wry smile, maybe?
Think of the L as a nose and the ) as a mouth twisted up to the side. (All he needed was an umlaut above the L.)

4. Considering that it's a cap-L...
they were aiming for the : key and hit L instead.

8. Could he be calling you a loser?
We used to make a thumb-and-forefinger 'L' on the forehead to symbolize that someone was a loser - maybe that's what this is. (However, I think the messed up :) is more likely.)

9. It think it's a typo.

Consider that L is right next to : on the keyboard, so if you're not paying attention then :) could become L) very easily.

On DU, I often type things like LshrugL and have to back and fix them

10. Thanks for all the suggestions of what it is.
The two that said the L was mistaken for a : is what I was going to preclude it to be. But then A couple of you said it was a wink. So now I don't know for sure. I was asking because it was in an email to me and I'm trying to determine if the person (who is European) was being flirtatious on the sly.:-)

11. You said it was from Foreigner, so I'm going to guess it means:
"Hot Blooded."
