Different accounts have them ranging from being the precursor to the Masons to being the first "satanic" cult ever to being a group that wants to destroy catholocism in retaliation for oppression that occured a thousand years ago or more.

They're a legend that's existed for centuries, and most likely don't actually exist. . . though some very cool stories and such have been written using them as a basis.
