Can someone explain the appeal of Daniel Johnston?

I just saw the movie 'The Devil and Daniel Johnston' yesterday. My freakin' God, what a horrible waste of two hours! I didn't realize it was a documentary while I was watching it. I thought it was a terrible joke that I just didn't get. Clue me in, please.

On the other hand I highly recommend 'Thank You For Smoking'. Hillariously funny, witty, etc. Fantastic casting. And Rob Lowe, who I normally don't really like very much, is absolutely BRILLIANT in this part.

2. Apparently, he's some sort of cult hero.

He's just so ironic (in the sense that EVERYTHING "cool" is ironic these days - I'm starting to hate irony). He's supposed to be this pure musician/artist (he also draws - google him) in the sense that children are pure artists, but I'm sorry, bad is just bad. And no amount of mental illness is going to make him cool to me.

Kurt Cobain apparently liked him.
