What is your genetic destiny?
What diseases and conditions run in your family?

Do you have any of them yet?

What are you doing to cheat fate?

1. There are a few.
Funnel chest deformity, which I have.

Colon cancer and polyps, which I have not been blessed with yet.

Diabetes, but I watch my sugar and carb intake due to triglyceride readings in the 800s.

Alzheimers, but I forget who....what was the question?

2. Depends on which side of the family
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 09:53 PM by LeftyMom
Mom's side all winds up dead of cancer before 60 (of course they all subsist on Marlboros and vodka) while Dad's side live into thier nineties with no real health or cognitive issues then die sudden deaths.

edit: Of course, genetics aren't destiny. Even if I had the crappy health genes from Mom's side I'd likely outlive them because I don't smoke, rarely drink and I eat well.

4. heart disease, mostly.
But I've had close family members suffer from epilepsy, alzheimer's, and MS. I guess the alzhimer's and the MS are negligible genetic traits, but both are likely to have environmental triggers, and since I lived in the same environment...

Knowing my luck, I'll probably eithr be hit by a truck ro live to be a bitter, sarcastic 100-year-old.

14. remember that time I posted a thread about what one wanted to
be when they grew up...when they were nine years old? I think it was something like that...I do not know how to find the link (one reason I don't have a journal...other reason I don't have one is cos I don't think I have ever said anything on here that is ...you know...of any real consequence)
excuse my digression...
back to the subject at hand...you replied that when you were little you wanted to grow up to be president but, now that you are an adult you have no desire to be....which is the EXACT reason why I think that you would make a GOOD one...because to me it shows that you are not POWER hungry and would be altruistic in your decision making...just my 2 pennies
and BTW did you know that peenies before 1982 are now worth more in copper than they are as a penny?

and yes, it's happening RIGHT NOW

My mom has blue eyes, didn't get 'em, but instead got a tendancy to get large.

On the other hand, I seem to have picked up a most interesting mutation from my dad: indestructible lungs. He's smoked all his life, and they can't find an atom of soot anywhere in his lungs. Of course, that's a complete non-incentive to stop smoking...

I had to get my lungs checked in college, in the middle of, well, several years of, ya know, , and they couldn't find anything that wasn't a clean, healthy pink in there.

And my sister can drink all of y'all under the table, even though nobody in my immediate genetic neighborhood drinks.

I am picking up my exercise levels a smidge, though.

60. Not really morbid
I'm fighting my destiny now as I take more after my mother's unhealthy side of the family.

I eat well, don't smoke, rarely drink, exercise regularly -- all the right things -- and yet I'm still having problems, which will require even more regimentation and conscious effort.

I really envy those people who are able to do whatever they what and not face health risks as a result. I don't think they realize how lucky they are.

58. Alzheimer's
My grandmother, who I look exactly like, had it. I have tried for years to keep on all the things you shouldn't do that make it more likely to get it, like drinking out of aluminum cans.

My grandfather had coronary artery disease, but he ate a really high fat country Southern cooking diet his whole life. My cholesterol has always been good, so i'm probably not at risk for that.

Anyway, I bascially try to live a healthy life, take my vitamins, eat a good low fat balanced diet, exercise 3-4 times a week, have never smoked. My one weakness is wine, but, hey, it works for the French!

My mother has heart disease but it is likely a function of malabsorption due to eating disorders. My father had diabetes and his dad died of it at a young age but it (grandfather's) went untreated and adult onset of diabetes is often a function of diet. My father died of the ill-effects of an accident that lost him a leg and an eye, the stress of which led to a series of strokes. My grandparents but for my father's father all died of old age, in essence, dying anywhere from between 85 and 100. I pray I don't live that long....

69. Not worrying about cheating fate.
My mom is thin, hot, and seemingly preserved in formaldehyde. Not only is she a stepford wife, but she is mistaken for my older sister. She's completely healthy, but choses to believe she's dying. She eats like shit, is anorexicly thin, and pops a bunch of pills.

My father was overweight, but good-looking, started greying at 13 and died at 50. He was a big partier when young. He had a strep infection that destroyed his kidneys and experimental drugs gave him cancer, which the doctors never monitored him for, even though they were supposed to. No luck with suing for medical malpractice because he "wasn't a productive member of society" since he was on disability. Even though, he worked two jobs (one for city government and one bartending) until he got sick.

There's a lot of heart problems in my family. However, I eat a very healthy pescarian diet. Most of them lived off of meat. I'm physically active with karate and hiking. I like drinking and I'm quitting smoking right after I finish this ciggarette (NJ smoking ban started today and it was the last one in the pack). So far, I'm completely healthy. I'm young though and the only thing I've been diagnosed with is ADD.

Personally, I don't worry about this stuff. I think living in NJ is probably more damaging to my health than what I do to my body.

73. To be a John R. Edwards Supporter for President
Not to be confused with the guy who claims he is a medium, John Edward.

74. Geez
Heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, dying fairly young--biological mother died when she was 61 from heart related problems, grandmother was a little older: she was 69. Never knew biological paternal family, so don't know that side at all. Maternal grandfather I never knew--he died about 1930 or so. He died from tuberculosis. Diabetes runs in family as well. Only form of cancer I know of is lung cancer, but those with it had major smoking habits. Including my adoptive dad, who was my biological mother's brother.

The only good piece of biological heritage I have is that I'm very rare in one way--my wisdom teeth never came in, which I hear is very rare indeed. :) No worries from that, at least!

75. Cancer for the smokers
Guaranteed, or double your money back. As a teenager, with one puff of a cigarette, my mouth tasted so filthy dirty, that I was doomed to a healthy life. There were a couple individuals who made it into their nineties. I'll probably be one. Unless I die first. :)
