Anybody here ever been to their high school reunion?
My 50th is coming up in October in Florida. Would love to know if you went to any of your reunions -- what happened -- did you recognize anybody? Have fun? Were bored? Is it worth it?

Class of 1956 -- someone sent this in... kinda cute!

Class Reunions: Author Unknown:

Every ten years, as summertime nears, an announcement arrives in the
mail, a reunion is planned; it'll be really grand; make plans to attend
without fail. I'll never forget the first time we met; we tried so hard
to impress. We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars, and wore our most
elegant dress.

It was quite an affair; the whole class was there. It was held at a fancy
hotel. We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined, and everyone thought
it was swell.

The men all conversed about who had been first to achieve great fortune
and fame. Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses and how
beautiful their children became.

The homecoming queen, who once had been lean, now weighed in at
one-ninety-six. The jocks who were there had all lost their hair, and the
cheerleaders could no longer do kicks.

No one had heard about the class nerd who'd guided a spacecraft to the
moon; or poor little Jane, who's always been plain; she married a
shipping tycoon.

The boy we'd decreed "most apt to succeed" was serving ten years in the
pen, while the one voted "least" now was a priest; just shows you can be
wrong now and then.

They awarded a prize to one of the guys who seemed to have aged the
least. Another was given to the grad who had driven the farthest to
attend the feast.

They took a class picture, a curious mixture of beehives, crew cuts and
wide ties. Tall, short, or skinny, the style was the mini; you never saw
so many thighs.

At our next get-together, no one cared whether they impressed their
classmates or not. The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal; by
this time we'd all gone to pot.

It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores; we ate hamburgers,
coleslaw, and beans. Then most of us lay around in the shade, in our
comfortable T-shirts and jeans.

By the fortieth year, it was abundantly clear, we were definitely over
the hill. Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed, and be home in
time for their pill.

And now I can't wait as they've set the date; our fiftieth is coming, I'm
told. It should be a ball; they've rented a hall at the Shady Rest Home
for the old.

Repairs have been made on my old hearing aid; my pacemaker's been turned
up on high. My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled; and
I've bought a new wig and glass eye.

I'm feeling quite hearty; I'm ready to party, I'll dance until dawn's
early light. It'll be lots of fun; and I hope at least one other person
can make it that night.

1. Went to the 25th
It was nice because we had sloughed off the high school identities and were on equal footing. Kids who would never have talked to each other in H.S. were conversing like old friends. I talked with some people who I hadn't thought about in years but seeing them again made me realize they were good kids who meant something to me at one time. I haven't lived in my hometown since graduation and I sense that my experience was different from those who did stay in the local area.

I'll do it again sometime.

11. Thanks for the post, Gormy Cuss.
I left North Miami a couple of times after graduation (!) -- returning twice against my will with two different husbands -- but don't go there much anymore. However, we will be going to Ft. Myers, and then on to Orlando -- unless there are terrible hurricanes again -- October 20, 21. The third leg of the trip, to South Beach, may have to be cancelled.

this song probably defines me as close as any song can:

Drive your mustang down, to where you hang out.
Alone without a friend.
Girls walk by you, some in fact have tried you.
But once they tried they never tried again.

Except the new girl.
Except the new girl.

Alone and lonesome, trusting no one they say,
You never had a friend.
People talk about you, they say they doubt you really,
Ever let anybody in.

Except the new girl.
Except the new girl.

I guess there's never been anyone.

Except the new girl.
Except the new girl.

Last time I saw him, he was laughing.
She was standing by his side.
I've got a feeling, that they're still together.
From the look that was in his eyes. There's no one,

Except the new girl.
Except the new girl.

See him smile, he don't care.
Says he loves her, and he'll always love her.
See him smile, it seems fair.
That he finally found her, finally hold her. There's no one,

Except the new girl.
Except the new girl.
Except the new girl.

3. My 30th is coming up
I made a brief appearance at a picnic for the 20th. I chatted with someone I'd known in jr high, who'd joined a nasty cliquish set in tormenting me during those 3 miserable years.

When I mentioned my son, who was rather sensitive, she said "Oh no! They're breeeeeeding!" If I see her at this one, I won't seek her company. Time doesn't change some folks I guess.

13. Oh, that was an ugly comment! Out of my four favorite friends,
no one is coming. However, a girl who befriended me in college (we were not friends in high school) has remained close for several decades. I was not the most popular girl in school, but was voted "Most Sophisticated" which probably means I was aloof and in my own world with my boy-friend, who was NOT in school.

It should be an interesting experience, I guess. The sad part is that lots of people have died (students and teachers) since I graduated in 1956. That's the tough part. We felt immortal when we stepped on the stage of the Dade County Auditorium to accept our diplomas.

In peace,

Haven't had the opportunity to attend a high school reunion. It's a little difficult when you're living out of state/country and you don't get the announcements.

My husband now has no contact with his high school or college. We did go to one college reunion but there was no one there that he knew! I guess it just depends on your experiences.

7. Went to my 10th ...

I won't go again unless I somehow manage to lose contact in the future with the only real friend I had in my graduating class. But since we still speak regularly, I have no reason to go.

The President and Vice President go married after graduation and turned into fundy freaks. They contacted me shortly before the reunion as one of the few people they knew who still lived in the old home town. They wanted help with coordination for festivities. They then proceeded to knock down every bit of help I tried to offer for those festivities as not in keeping with their Christian values. For example, I told them I could get a keg of beer at wholesale cost. They pretty much dumped me at that point. I had apparently become a heathen.

The event itself was the most boring thing I have ever attended. We toured the school, went to the local park for a picnic, and ate dinner at a local restaurant. That was it. Some of my old crowd and I gathered later at my house for an impromptu "cure the boredom" party, but we mostly ended up doing little but bitching about how we always hated "those people" in high school, and wasn't it weird some of us traveled hundreds or thousands of miles just to be belittled by them again.

8. went to my 10th. little had changed. the cool kids got stoned in the
parking lot, and at the party afterwards. The cheerleaders were all thin, gorgeous, lawyers and doctors. the only redeeming quality was that a few of the nerds had become quite chill in their late twenties. But mostly, it was more of the same from the class of 91.

72. Vegas? I was way too short for any of those jobs! Just 5' 3 1/2 inches...
and now I'm just 5'1". I can only do ballroom dancing, although I never tried modern dance or ballet!

As it was, I got my first job -- co-host of a Miami children's show -- because I sitting in the front row and making an "A" in the Introduction to Radio and TV 101 class at the University of Miami. Dr. Sidney Head recommended me for the job.

And, it turned out that I looked like one of the producer's former girlfriends.

the 10 & the 20.

10 was like the day after graduation. Met up with a woman who'd been my friend in Choir from Jr. High on; it was like we had just picked up a conversation we'd been having the day before. :) Eveyone was still clique-y, so I of course, didn't fit in anywhere except with my friends from Choir.

20, well, I'd gained quite a bit of weight (some of it has come off now, hopefully the rest by the 30th); met up with my friend from the 10th again, this time exchanging cell phone #s. :) A couple of other friends I'd hung with in school showed up & we all had a great time together. One of them hadn't been back to the area in over 20 years, had had a terrible time, she was just so happy to see us. She was shocked that I remember she sat behind me in Civics & then I stunned her by saying, "Yes & the -- twins sat in front of both of us." I remember weird stuff like that. Someone I don't even remember came & thanked me for doing or saying something I don't even remember doing/saying & how much that had an impact on them. I just said "Thanks" because I didn't want to spoil whatever it was that meant for them & screw up their lives from that point on. My friend who was the head cheerleader & I were :wow: at the "dancing" done by the cheerleaders at the pep rally. We both agreed: If we'd danced like that, we'd have been expelled. All those girls needed to make the "stripper/ho" theme complete were some poles to dance around. I can't believe their parents let them dance like that, but oh well. And I'm no prude. The woman who was voted "most beautiful" all four years in high school was looking a bit worse for the wear. If she drinks & smokes like she did in HS & at the reunion, she's going to look like a hag at the 30. Shame, because she was always nice to me.

Not sure if I want to go back for the 30. Too many "ghosts" in that town for me, too many memories of my parents & of me in younger days when I just knew I'd accomplish a lot & right now, I don't feel like I've done squat. Went to Classmates.com yesterday & did that ever drag up some stuff, not all of it positive.

Maybe it's just the mood I'm in right now.

74. Wolverinedg, thanks for the post. There is a bittersweet quality to these
relationships I had in high school, too. I was not in the popular crowd and didn't have any siblings or really close friends. So I'm not expecting much -- it's kind of just curiosity that's driving me.

Feel better.

Had a really good time. I left the state a couple years after I graduated from HS so it was interesting to go back after 20 years.

I went to a huge HS so I spent time meeting new people and getting reacquainted with old friends.

It was worth going to.

Just like high school.

Mr. Gray is 7 years older than I am, but he actually looked younger than a lot of the guys I went to HS with. I couldn't get past the same cliques and exclusiveness from some of my class. I spent an hour there, and then ran home...Mr. Gray howling with laughter the entire way. Everytime we see something about a reunion on tv or elsewhere, he points at me and howls. He's never, ever been to a reunion and he never will.

He had a whole schtick going and it was so unexpected...the reactions of people were hilarious.

Another real honey of a thing was that some cone headed girl (now woman) that I had grown up with is now a committed devotee of Billy Graham--she cornered me and started espousing the joys of bush and how dignity had been restored to the chimp house (this was in 2002)I wasn't very nice...and my friend dragged me away!

The reunion was entertaining but for all the wrong reasons lol

24. Wow, 50th....I can't even imagine that. That's cool that you're going.
I went to my 10th and my 20th reunions. They were both somewhat cheesy, but also sweet in their own ways.

The first one (my 10th), I was newly in love and happily brought along my man with me, to show off. In fact, two weeks afterwards, he proposed to me. We were in that kind of glowy, happy love...I remember that whole time with very sweet memories.

For my 20th, which was 4 yrs ago, I went with my man again, this time as my husband. I re-connected with only one good friend of mine, who I hadn't seen since graduation. She hadn't gone to the 10th. It was really good to see her and connect again, but she'd gone through some tough times. Married and divorced, unhappily involved with the man she'd brought along...it was bittersweet.

At the 20th, the DJ/emcee did a REALLY cheesy thing where each table of 10 had to pick the ONE person who "had changed the least". I was the one picked for my table, in fact. Then, those people were invited to go stand in a line, with the others of their gender, and by applause when the DJ held his hand over each person's head, the winner, the one who had changed the least, was selected. It was like living high school all over again. Talk about a popularity contest. :eyes:

Of course, the DJ diplomatically called the winner of the females who had changed the least a TIE. It was very awkward for me....and I wasn't even selected for the tie!

Plus, the music of the 80's basically sucked, so the DJ dance music had a lot to be desired. :puke:

All in all, I'm glad I went, although I don't know if I'd go again. Maybe....

Have fun! :hi:

I just hope there are no awful hurricanes to render the experience very grotesque. Most of the people from North Miami High School still live in Florida. The reunion is in Orlando and it looks like it will dovetail with getting together with my son, daughter, and grandkids for most of the week. That will be very sweet.

26. Went to my 20th
My husband and I went with my still best friend (from highschool if you can believe it) and her husband.

I have to tell you what a waste of money...

The same stupid people were in the same cliques --some of the *former cheerleaders* were wearing gaudy cheap gowns that would only have looked appropriate on 17 year olds (who weighed 20 pounds less) attending their senior proms.

We had a good time with our friends in spite of the reunion and there were a few people there that I didn't know well in highschool, that were actually quite entertaining as *grown ups*... but all in all it wasn't that thrilling.

Maybe a 50th would be more interesting but my advice would be to skip the 20th reunion...I will not be attending my 25th next summer!

28. Went to my 20th. It was awesome -- The Revenge of the Nerds.
The snooty, stuck on herself ex-prom queen who'd won a beauty contest her senior year was trying to relive her past glory by appearing in a white, slinky jumpsuit. Unfortunately her figure no longer lent itself to slinkiness and she looked sort of pitiful, what with the big ass and all. A couple of the footbal hero jocks were there, but now balding and gone a bit to seed. They were in sales, mostly. And the class pass-around looked like an aging madam. *Meow*

On the other hand, the unpopular nerdy kids (of which I was one) who were routinely dissed and snubbed by the above, were now better looking than they had been at 17 or 18 and had gone on to interesting careers.

It was fun; I'm glad I went. Time wounds all heels.

29. I went to my tenth year reunion
Most of my friends already were married with kids. I was still single. I saw my prom date; my roommate at the time insisted that I shouldn't be talking to him because he had a girlfriend. I really wanted to go out with him again, but stupidly listened to the roommate.

Twentieth: Didn't go. Got a phone call from the former class president asking me to attend. I said "no, thank you." I got an e-mail from the former prom date asking me what I'd been doing, and by the way, was I still single?

Thirtieth: Don't know if I will go. I'm tending towards not.

I've been informed by certified letter that I am banned from all future reunions.

35. A few of the most popular girls belittled some people
at the reunion. One of the girls made disgusting jokes about a classmate that had passed away (she had Down's Syndrome). A few of my old stoner friends knew I was getting angry so...

They bought an entire bottle of Jim Beam, repeatedly poured me shots and helped me get drunk quickly. They wanted to watch the upcoming fight and knew that alcohol would bring it about sooner.

I told about 30 people off all at once in front of the entire room. I burst a few bubbles and poked holes in stories that night. (Come on, no one graduates from high school and has a PhD two years later! And if it could be done no way God would have chosen her for the role.) I also told some old secrets, such as who slept w/ whose boyfriend in high school and who said what about whom. I also informed them that their company made me vomit and that I hope to see them in hell over the comments about the deceased classmate.

Later on I caught the class treasurer dumping a beer on my car. I felt the need to tell her off. She tried to bitchslap me so I kicked her ass in front of everyone.

She's the one who sent me the certified letter, along w/ five signatures from her friends. Being disinvited doesn't hurt my feelings and, if the truth be told, they didn't actually send me an invite to the tenth. I showed up because an old friend was there and I wanted to see her.

40. I thoroughly enjoyed kicking her ass.
I did it once in high school. Doing it again that night made me feel like a spring chicken.

I was recently contacted by an old classmate. We were never friends in high school but we got along fine. He stated that he would have liked to have gone but didn't know how they would act toward him. He was very private and quiet in high school. Since then he has come out. He said that he wanted to go and bring his partner w/ him but was afraid of the small town mentality.

He told me that he knew what they would say and do to him. Sadly, I had to agree w/ him. He was right about them.

Only good part would have been if they had targeted him I would have had more fights that night. I'm the kind of gal that likes to fight and I fight like a girl-no rules whatsoever.

We're having our reject reunion on a yearly basis now. The rejects are the people who will not be welcome at the "official" reunion. First one is planned for this summer.

34. I went to my 10th and my 20th...
The 10th was fun; almost every woman there was wearing black, brown, or navy blue. I wore a lipstick red silk dress. It was nice to be noticed. :D

The 20th was better, though. It was much better attended, and age had been good to many personalities. I saw friends I hadn't seen since graduation. I felt a little melancholy when it was done.

And I didn't particularly like high school, or many of the kids. I was not one of the popular kids, and our school had a huge popular jock clique. But I went anyway, partly because I'm too curious about people and partly because I looked much better post-high school than I did back then. At the first couple of reunions, folks acted similar to how they did in high school, but then in subsequent reunions they acted like adults.

My friends went to a couple of the reunions and I had fun seeing them, but they didn't go to any of the others. I found that the folks who I ended up talking with the most--we remembered each other the most --were the ones I went to elementary school with, even if I never saw them in jr high or high school. Maybe that's because we saw each other in the same classes every year for six years, I don't know.

I went to my 30th, by myself, a few years ago, and much to my surprise, I had a blast! An innocent bystander would have thought that I had been one of the popular kids, the way I ended up hanging out with so many people. One woman, who had been one of the few nice kids out of the popular group, was dragging me up to the dance floor to be part of the group dancing up a storm! I was also invited back to parties in people's hotel rooms, though I didn't go because I was quite tired and didn't want to have to drive home even later in the pouring rain.

47. Avoided them till the 15th
and then felt "out of it" because I still wasn't married-- but at least I finally had a career!

Went to the 35th last year, and had a decent time, because I had connected with a couple of old boyfriends thru the Internet and it was a hoot to see them in person. One in particular was as cute as ever, very liberal, plus he was a self-made millionare who retired in his early 40s! (But I am,now, finally, happily married--sigh.)

But felt a bit melancholy throughout-- it was in a tacky hotel with awful loud music, and I felt acutely aware that time was going by much too fast.

The capper was when a couple of the women left, gaily calling out as they went thru the doors-- "See ya in 10 years, when we're in our sixties"!!

56. went to the 10th and 20th
I went to a trade school and I was on the committee that put the 10th reunion together. I brought my wife with me even though she went to another school and wasn't crazy about reunions, in fact she has never been to any of hers. It was fun seeing people who I hadn't laid eyes on in 10 years. The funny thing was the weight the hot girls had put on and the lack of hair on the dudes who had shoulder length hair and were considered cool. For my 20th my wife had no interest in going so I invited my English teacher to be my guest for the night. Miss Dunkerley was a cool lady who treated us as equals and who I credit with my liberalness. I had a great time and so did she, sadly she passed away last July at age 81 and I didn't hear of it until late August. I miss her and wish her peace. I saw that the class president who was voted most likely to succeed and was part of the clique was divorced and working in a cemetery, the vice president divorced and working a dead end job as were most of the other members of the clique. My cousin was part of that class and was in pattern shop and like me, we went through high school unnoticed, when he graduated he continued his education in junior college and then transfered to UMASS where he got his Phd. in Psychology. It was all I could do to keep from laughing in the faces of the "in crowd" as the doctor and I went around the room getting reacquainted. What is it they say about karma?

51. I went to the 25th
it was at the local VW firehall. The food was ok, there was boring beer and wine, and there was a cake and ballons and low lighting that reminded me of jr high dances....husband was bored to tears.

When they started to do the YMCA dance, I said, get me out of here.

The nice thing was that I did see some very nice people from my town, who were still really nice. We had nice chats about kids and what an idyllic little town we grew up in.

If the 30th is at a decent restaurant with grown-up accoutrements, I might go again. But alone.

I had few friends at my high school, so there's little point. Most of my friends went to one of the other two schools.

Saw some photos from my 30th at classmates.com. The homecoming queen had the worst boob job ever, and she was wearing a tank top to show 'em off. Looked like someone cut an old canteloupe in half and threw 'em at her real hard, and they stuck.

57. Go go go
Went to my 15th, 20th, and 30th, and had a lot of fun. It's interesting to see how people's lives have turned out since high school days.

Everyone acted pretty normal, with the exception of those whose lives peaked in high school. It was rather pathetic to see them unable to cope with their relative lack of success when compared to other classmates.

Anyway, I'd recommend going. It can very well be an enjoyable experience for you; no one remembers each others' high school hangups, and are just as interested in how your life has turned out as you may be in theirs.

65. So judgmental .. never been
I may very well go to the next benchmark reunion. I don't really care to judge how other lives have turned out. This business of evaluating a person's career success seems lame and suggests feeling good in other's miseries. Who cares what kind of person a classmate was in HS? I'm more interested in what kind of person you are now and how you have developed over a lifetime. Some of us have a harder road to travel than others.

71. Went to my 10th & 20th
The 10th was as if it was the day after graduation, same cliques, attitude, dismissiveness, arrogance, rudeness, etc... the only difference being that people got fatter, balder and nastier. It was an awful experience for many.

The 20th was a lot more laid back, people being much more mature that the first one, however the 10th left such a bad taste to so many that they didn't show up. Especially those who stayed in the area and those are the ones I wanted to see.

After that one (the 20th) I came to peace with my horrible high school years and doubt that I'll go to anymore reunions - nothing personal - I've just put it behind me and that's where I'd like to keep it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120032/

Plot Summary for
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997)

Romy and Michelle have been through it all, including being tortured by the popular crowd when in high school. When they receive word of a 10 year reunion they come to realize their lives aren't as impressive as they'd like them to be. Instead of staying home they go to the reunion with business outfits, cell phones, and one heck of a bogus success story.

I didn't bother embellishing what I did for a living, what's the point of lying? Like Romy & Michele, all I ever wanted was to be treated like a human being. The people at my school were so brutal, someone other dork in our class could have come up with the cure for cancer and I swear, it wouldn't have mattered - they'd still be treated like shit. You couldn't win.
