It's clean and affordable, and has a low crime rate.

2. My 2 Cents!
Greatest, Portland, Maine (a plug for my adopted home state).

Worst, Dallas for 2 reasons. First, 11/22/63. Second, I'm a die hard Philadelphia Eagles fan and hating Dallas is a tradition!

103. Most hated - Philly, for the reason above
The most vile, crude fans in football. Anyone who would cheer a player while lying paralyzed on a football field is downright sick.

One Philly fan said the days of the Dallas obsessions were over. Your post just disqualified that remark.

119. Take a Chill Pill!
If you had actually bothered to read my post, I didn't say anything about any individual player. For years, the rivalry was the Eagles/Cowboys. It looks that they have the coach to take them back their glory days now.

Fact 1. The Cowboys and Eagles INTENSIVELY dislike each other. Fact 2. The fans in each city will ALWAYS take joy in the other team losing. I personally didn't say anything about the Michael Irvin incident. They shouldn't have cheered his injury. On the other hand, Irvin pretty much portrayed himself as a jerk during his playing days. Most people getting caught with cocaine in a hotel room would have addressed the cops with something other than "Do you know who I AM?"

Besides, if you had, again, bothered to read my actual post, my PRIMARY reason is 11/22/03. Maybe you could get somebody to tell you the significance of that date!

3. Best: Seattle, Portland
Seattle is a glorious, magnificent city that you truly have to see to believe. We have two snowcapped mountain ranges, vast forests, several spectacular bodies of water, and pristine ocean beaches only a short drive from the city. We also have a world-class skyline, three professional sports teams (a big deal in the northwest), and a very mild climate. Plus Seattle is overwhelmingly liberal/Democratic (it went for Gore by over forty points) and very active politically. The only real downside is the horrendous traffic, but that's because so many people want to live here.

Portland is also a wonderful city. It's not as large or as glamorous as its rival to the north (Seattle), but it is definitely well on its way to greatness. It's incredibly clean, very friendly, well-kept, and boasts one of the finest public transportation sytems in the nation. City planners literally come from all fifty states to study Portland, and many consider it to be one of the best planned cities in the nation if not the world. And, as you might imagine, it's overwhelmingly liberal/Democratic. What more could you ask for?

57. Would you hush?!
There's enough people moving here now! We have to keep telling them about how bad the traffic is (true), how grey it often is (true!), and how many people are out of work (also true). Don't tell them the good parts, dammit!

(I'm a native Seattleite, and I always try to convince people they'd hate it here.)

7. Richmond, Va is The Worst
Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 03:14 AM by vadem0557
I hate this place. The Best? Dunno, but I like Savannah,
Va Beach/Norfolk, or any other small to medium sized southern city (not Richmond). Haven't spent too much time on the west coast--Modesto, Ca--wasn't impressed. Don't like the big cities (ie: NY etc..) too many people trying to do too much at the same time--but they are fun to visit though.

31. My hometown :)
Where I was born and raised, that is :-)

One good thing you have to say about Rochester is that despite the snow the people who clean the roads (the town crews) really do keep them clear and work very hard to do it. My dad did that in Henrietta for about 20 years and all those guys worked hard to keep the streets safe for everyone.

That and the lilacs in the spring :-)

The snow is a problem. But summers in Upstate NY are beautiful.

Plus I messed up when I was young and get nostalgic for the place.
Voc rehab was gonna pay to send me to the deaf college up there when I was 18 and I turned it down because I didn't think I could work and still get the scholarship and the fact that since I had always been around hearing people, I would get culture shock.

Really dumb move.

36. What's wrong with Baltimore? Its a real honest city.
It has some horribly poor sections, but so do Washington and Detroit and even, come to mention it, New York. But it has industry, community, cohesion and culture, just the kind that much of the country doesn't have.

I'm less of a fan of Miami, but there's still an awful lot going on there.

Now you mention bad cities, I'll give you bad cities.

Hartford is bad. Flint is bad. Detroit is bad. Gary is bad. Toledo is bad. Houston is bad. Dallas is bad. Louisville is bad. Springfield, Mass is bad. Atlanta is bad. St. Louis is getting worse. And I've just started.

But don't go knocking Balmore.

96. Hey! What's the problem with KC?
Kansas City's crime is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Fifteen years ago, maybe, but things have improved greatly since the 80's. As for calling it ugly, I'll admit that's a pretty subjective thing, but there are huge sections of the city that can be called downright beautiful. It's got some rundown areas, too, but what city doesn't?

Sorry to sound so indignant, but I gotta defend my hometown.

The activist community in STL is strong, if smaller than San Francisco. It takes work to be an activist here because it's not a part of the culture as it seems to be in Northern California.

It's a matter of perspective....I'd love to live in NYC, San Francisco or even Chicago but I find myself in the Lou so I make the best of it.

Living in the Lou is affordable for a single person making a bit above a living wage.

58. Lahaina, Santa Cruz, Hana, Lihue, Key West
San Diego, Eugene, San Francisco, Portland, and (shhh! don't tell anyone - my hometown - Seattle) are my favorites.

The ones I truly disliked: Toledo. Newark. Omaha. Oklahoma City. Houston. Sacramento. Orlando. Anaheim.

The one I expected to dislike, but actually liked a lot: Cleveland! There's a lot to be said for the lake, now that it's not a vat of sewage. Miami, I could go either way - it's a strange, schizophrenic city. Atlanta had pretty horrendous traffic, but was otherwise an interesting place.

I want to see New Orleans and Tucson and Taos. Haven't been to any of them yet.

I'll give nods to Seattle, San Fran, New York, and Portland, Maine, too.

As for the worst, where do I begin? There are so many.

Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Tampa, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and on and on and on. We do know how to screw up the creation of a city, don't we?

It is a nice city. Very clean, alot of history. Good resturaunts too. great seafood. I live in Eastport, only a few miles from where George Washington resigned as head of the continental army, where Francis Scott Key lived. My mother lives downtown on a street that the home of a signer of the Declaration of Independence lived on.

what a shithole.Pollution to prove it, # 1 in the USA. The lack of spell check in the general populace is really annoying. The illiteracy rate is near 20%. One in five on the road with you can't read. Portable signs.Damn those are a whole other form of pollution.
No zoning; a junkyard next to a church next to a titty bar next to a house. I have seen this. Oh and every suburb has it's own damn police force so there's like one or two cars of every police appearance every few miles.
I hate Houston.

86. Best: L.A., San Francisco and San Diego
I've lived in L.A. (for the past 14 years) and I love it. Obviously the traffic sucks but I've developed some great friendships and relationships, there's ALWAYS so much to do, the weather is perfect, and I just love the creative energy here. It close to the beaches and the mouuntains. People that don't like it haven't been here or haven't given it a chance (imho). The worst city is, without question, Houston. I lived there for five years and I have a brother and sister that live there now. I only go there when someone dies (out of obligation). The weather is horrible (the humidity is almost intolerable and it floods at the drop of a hat), a lot of the people are arrogant rednecks, and it's got to the the UGLIEST town on the planet.

87. San Francisco the worst, San Diego the best
I made the mistake of taking my children to a 49ers game once. I honest to God had never had a worse trip in my life. At most stadiums the fans are cool, but in SF, we had people saying horrible things in front of my kids, people urinating in public, the ATM machines were absolutely filthy, our care got broken into, and most of the people were rude.
In San Diego I saw the opposite. Frendly family-type people. The downtown was clean. No bad language. Just a great deal more class.

But from among the places I have been on vacation:

Best: Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, Savannah, Charleston, Phoenix, Seattle, Asheville, Portland (ME), Burlington (VT), Providence, Annapolis

Worst: Detroit, Dubuque, Gary, Quad Cities, Rockford, Troy (NY)

Best and worst: NYC. Great place to visit, wouldn't live there in a thousand years.

Of the places I have lived:

Madison, WI is a great city, but I have bad memories associated with it of a lousy relationship and a crappy job market.

Albany, NY isn't bad. Not the prettiest of cities, but an interesting history.

Ditto Hartford, CT (where I grew up). I have fond memories of Christmas shopping there with my mother.

I haven't traveled a whole heck of a lot, but from the places I've been, I'm going to have to go with Burlington, VT for the best. If I liked big cities, I'd probably go with Boston, MA.

Best: Chicago, Seattle, San Fran, Philly (dirty as hell..at least the west side was in 1999...but still cool), NYC, DC, Baltimore, Orlando (people of South Florida could take a lesson in civility from the O-town folks! As well as how to have public transportation that is actually worth a damn!), I can't think of any others I've been to, so sorry if I left out your cool city!

Worst: Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/West Palm Beach, hands down. Nastiest damn folks on the face of this planet. No natural beauty left, PAVE THE WHOLE DMAN STATE WHILE YER AT IT! And don't start me on how crap the drivers are! Also, Detroit (the people are alright, but damn! the city is a complete demilitarized zone!), Tampa, Cincinatti, Indianapolis, Jacksonville (I take back what I said about Detroit...THIS is the smelliest, dumpiest town I have EVER been to!), Nashville...that should do it!

There I said it, now get the hell outta here,
