Unfortunately, a lot of liquor stores just close. The others have tarps over the hard liquor or have the aisles roped off. Pretty ridiculous.

Of course, "food" is highly subjective: potato chips count as "food". The liquor stores are all closed. If you want beer, you have to drink the abomination known as "3.2", which is a holdover from the Prohibition era.

Of course, the only cars you see in the parking lots of liquor stores in Wisconsin border towns on Sunday are from Minnesota.

When I lived in South Florida, you can buy liquor 24/7. I miss that. If you want anything to drink on Sunday here, you better get to the liquor store Saturday night.

You can buy 3.2 beer & wine coolers at the grocery or convenience stores everyday, except between the hours of 2-6 a.m.

Being forced to close on Sunday was the only reason I got a day off when I ran a booze shack. :-)

I hated election days though. Closed until 7pm, then open for two hours while a line of shakers runs through, pissed off, yelling at you like it's your fault.

36. In NYC the supermarkets are so small...

that if they put in a decent wine selection they wouldn't have room for food. NY has always been the second largest wine producing state; perhaps the wine lobby found the arrangement to their advantage. Vintage NY, a winery store, had a considerable advantage for a few years in that they were allowed to be open 7 days a week but now they have changed the laws and they have a bit more competition on Sundays.

for years, it was no Sundays period. Then they made a law that allowed all package stores (a Massachusetts term for a liquor store) to open on the Sundays from after Thanksgiving til New Years, the holida season, from noon to 6pm.

Package store owners were complaining about lost revenue on Sundays, mainly by stores by the New Hampshire border, so they allowed stores that were 15 miles from a state border to be open on Sundays, also noon to 6pm.

They finally got smart and changed the laws so any package store can be open on Sundays, noon to 6pm. But, lsat year, they found a law in the books that say package stores cannot be open on Christmas. Since Christmas fell on a Sunday, the law says Monday the 26th they had to be closed. Supposedly, they are going to repeal that as well.

It changed a couple of years ago. I don't buy much wine (I never buy beer b/c I hate it!), but I remember all the newspaper articles about the change and how much fundies in this area were against it. They were all up in arms about selling beer and wine one hour earlier than it had been.

I guess it beats blue laws---those were so archaic it'd make your head spin. Thankfully, they were repealed a long time agon.

The state law is after noon. Some cities and counties have more restrictive laws, and some stores will not sell any alcohol on Sundays.

Meijer, in Grand Rapids, refused to sell liquor on Sundays. I don't know if that is still the case-they always have used the state law as precedent in this part of the state.

One of the nicer things about CA, nothing really closes on Sundays. It's the biggest shopping day around here.

I hate when I'm traveling to less civilized corners of the universe (Ohio is *really bad* about this) and nothing's open on Sundays. Why should I waste a day doing nothing because of somebody else's superstitions?
