Girl Toys & Boy Toys-An Easter Story

So after the Easter egg hunt, my neice (3) and nephew (5) were going through their loot. My nephew, Jake, was complaining about his Easter Pez dispenser. I thought it was because it was "girly." So I gave him a talk about how there's no such thing as boy toys or girl toys. They're all just toys and boys can play with dolls, etc. Jake's just staring at me the whole time and when I'm done, he says, "Yeah, I know Aunt Jackie. I said this was for babies, not girls. I play with dolls." I was like like, "Oh okay. Well, good to know."

3. Yeah, they're cool kids though.

They're both smart & well-behaved and with a good set of liberal parents and grandparents. The mom's a feminist and the dad's a jock, so I've seen Jake go from playing Princess to Football and back during the span of an hour.

4. Well idealistic as that concept is... there really IS a gender difference

in the toys that males and females prefer, even from very, very early on.

Long before my kid watched teevee, went to the store; was subjected to advertising and marketing, SHE WANTED PINK.

Anything pink, pretty dainty, girlie, cutsie, dammit, she would always choose it over any of the gender nuetral or male defined toys.

Believe me. I TRIED SO HARD to give her cool tools, trucks, cars, gender neutral, male defined, female defined toys and clothes. And she ALWAYS zeroed in on the girly stuff.

Not a damn thing I could do about it.

I'm very male defined. I prefer darks, simple, flat shoes, etc. I get girlie when I dress up and have a very feminine (and I am HOT) side, but I am very male defined in many ways.

So until you have kids of your own... don't be so sure that some gender preferences aren't pre-determined. A hella lotta boys toys ended up unused at goodwill from my house after xmas!!!!

5. Well, I've seen the kid play with both.

I've also seen other little boys make fun of him for playing with girls toys. So he basically doesn't have a preference, but he has gotten called a girl over it. His sister also doesn't have much of a gender-preference in toys. Their youngest is only one, so who knows about him.

My sister and I both didn't have preferences with toys. She turned out straight. I turned out gay. Although, I have joked before that I was cross-dressing my barbies with GI Joe clothes and my parents were STILL shocked that I turned out to be a lesbian.
