Man Accused Of Trapping, Euthanizing Neighbor's Cat

WEST ISLIP, N.Y. -- A man who didn't get along with his neighbor trapped her cat in his backyard and then took it to an animal shelter to be euthanized, police said.

Regina Fagone searched the neighborhood for two days earlier this month after her cat disappeared, and then went to the Town of Islip Animal Shelter.

Employees there broke the news to her: Her cat, a Russian blue, had been euthanized that day.

Richard DeSantis, 56, was arrested Saturday and was charged with criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property and making a punishable false written statement, police said. He was issued a desk appearance ticket and will be arraigned June 5.

DeSantis, reached by telephone at his home Sunday, said there are two sides to every story and then hung up.

Police said an investigation found DeSantis had captured the cat and dropped it off at the shelter to be killed.

4. You know, I understand that not everybody likes cats or ...

understands why we pet people love animals so much, but I think before people get snarky about something like this, they could at least think about it as needless cruelty. If that neighbor liked the cat and having the cat gave her/him some comfort and this other person took that away, then it's a bad thing. It's a sick thing. It's a cruel thing. It's not funny. It's not some clever "gotcha" to a neighbor this man disliked. It's adding to the suffering of this world and we really, really don't need anymore of that, in any form or degree.

That's really all I have to say.

Edited to add that I'm not implying that anybody here would get snarky about it, but I'm just a little fed up with peoples' lack of compassion in general today.

6. You have to wonder about the mental stability of someone

who would do that to a harmless animal because he hated the neighbor. People who harm animals will often cross the line and harm humans too. What if it had been the neighbor's child?

they are a non native predator that systematically kills our native wildlife including our native bird species and rodents

One of ours is a Russian Blue ... I can't stand the thought of someone doing that to her or any other pet. I hope they throw the book at that cruel asshole. :grr:

Why was it running loose?

I had a cat that used to come into MY yard and kill birds, and more than once I considered trapping it and taking it to the shelter.

Conversely, when my kitty got out and was lost, I went right to the shelter hoping she would be there. :(

14. This happened to a friend's cat.

The neighbor kept seeing kitty footprints on his car. So he took the cat to the shelter & let them kill it.

This is one of many reasons to keep you cats indoors. But it's not an excuse for the sickos, either.

15. Almost happened to a cat of mine

she loved to visit people in the neighborhood. 1 person thought she was a (well fed healthy) stray so took her to the animal shelter. I got her back just in time. I made a habit of meeting new neighbors and letting them know that she lived with me but liked to visit so please don't keep her in at night, or feed her, just let her visit and she came home every night except for 1 neighbor who liked to cuddle with her (he smoked and she reeked afterwards).

i'm heartsick abt this shit, my neighbor's cat just killed an entire nest of wild mockingbirds, in a just world, my neighbor would have to pay $20,000 for each of the five baby wild birds killed, in accord w. migratory bird treaty act of almost 100 years

today i got an email that the population of birds in usa is 20 percent of what it was 50 years ago
