I lost my boyfriend to mental illness last night
He was working and taking meds, we were ordering the meds from India because he didn't have any insurance. Well, something happened to the latest shipment and he didn't get his meds on time. He started to withdrawl and started to slowly lose his mind until last night when it all came to a head. He tried to strangle me. He called 911 looking for help and the cops came and were total assholes to him. The paramedics came and were assholes too!The ambulance took him to the hospital. He was held for a couple of hours and he was released. He went to his Mother's house. I tried calling him this morning and he is still a mess and very hostile towards me. So I guess this is it, he can't get help and get the meds that he needs to be on, he can't be in my house. I feel really bad for the guy. :-(

1. I'm so sorry
There is a mental health crisis in this country and nobody seems to realize it. I hope he gets the help he needs and that you are able to heal and move past this terrible moment.

3. I talked to a very wise woman yesterday
after all of this happened. She says that everyone she knows is depressed. This country is going through some hard times right now and it's really showing. Talking to her really opened up my eyes. I wasn't all that depressed before, but I guess I'll climb down the ladder and join you all....

8. Welll, I'm not depressed.
just because others are doesn't mean you have to be, Roon. Yes, we're going through hard times as a country, yes, your boyfriend is clearly going through a challenging time, but YOU still have the choice about how you move forward in your life.

I'm sorry things are hard right now. I wish you peace, comfort and clarity.

20. Depression is not a choice
You can try to change your thought patterns and hope to recover. However, it is a constant battle. I assure it is not a choice.

27. You got that right!!
I've been dealing with depression for years...I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

Now before you all start telling me "you need to exercise, depression is an excuse to sell you meds, blah, blah, blah"...save your breath. I've heard it all before and it's bullshit.

If I wasn't taking the meds I am taking, I am not to sure that I would be sitting here typing this post.

Depression absolutely fucking sucks.

5. Awww, thanks
My biggest issue right now is being alone again. I was alone for 7 months the last time and it was very painful. I suffered a lot. I am mentally ill too, but I am on medicaide/care and get all the meds I need.

9. Words fail
Working in the mental health field, all I can do is add my voice to the growing list of people who know we should do more. I am so sorry we failed you both. The sad fact is that with medication, therapy and support, most mental illnesses can be managed well. And yet we don't give the money for it.

I'm sorry for your experience with the police et al. Where I live the police are pretty good about working with our mental health system, but I suspect that is more a rarity than anything else.

It sounds like it was a very traumatic night for you, and I suspect it will be painful for some time to come. I hope you find the love and support you need through this tough time.

As a complete aside, overall how did getting meds from India work? I know this ended horribly, but it might be a chance worth taking rather than no meds for some of the people I know. Let me know if, or whenever you want to. No worries if it doesn't happen.

Wishing you peace and love.

12. We ordered the meds from India
off the Internet. We used to get the order in five days, but after this last order, we were informed that it was gonna take 3 weeks.

11. He should be in the hospital for more than a couple of hours
Health insurance be damned. It sounds as if he may be experiencing psychosis. It is a living hell. Please, for your own safety, don't try to contact him until he gets the treatment that he needs.

25. Why not blame the Indians or postal service instead?
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 07:01 PM by HypnoToad
Or this "compassionate" world we live in?

Why is he so hostile to you and not to his mother?

My condolances, hwoever. I'm sure plenty of my exes decided I was pretty strange too. (just not like how yours was, fortunately...)
