20. How old are you, if you don't mind revealing your age?
With luck, I'll be able to pay off just enough of my debts to afford a shovel to dig my own grave before keeling over at the age of 90.

38. 42. Yes, young, but given how I have lived my life, it's a minor
miricle that I did this. LOL

Lived large when I was young, never thought about the future. Then bills begin piling up.

Put my nose to the grind stone. Lived very very very lean, monk like.

and here I am.

17. I went the bankruptcy route 3 years ago
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 03:39 PM by LiberalPartisan
...best move I ever made. And I enjoyed sticking the banks with about 50K in credit card debt. Been cash only ever since, even though I get abou 8 credit card offers a month. Life is a lot easier now.

51. I wouldn't say proud...
but I'm not regretful. The way I see it, the banks, especially the credit card companies have it rigged to keep people in debt. So I had no qualms about doing it.

I haven't filed, but my credit is in the crapper and I am *still* on the hook trying to afford everything. It would be a huge relief to just file bankruptcy and be done with it.

We DO have a mortgage, but even after the refi for a roof, new A/C, kitchen remodel, yard bldg, and concrete & yard work, we still have over 200K in equity for down the road when my husband retires and we sell the beast..

We use ATM/Debit cards exclusievly, and don't miss the cards one bit:)

Congrats to you on paying off the house :)

22. Way to go...........
But, keep in mind that sitting with your house paid off means you're sitting on a very valuable asset that really could be used as collateral for cash to invest in something else.

Like, the real estate market is about to take a serious downturn, so you might want to pick up a rental property.

Just the lawyer in me thinking out loud about unused assets..............

Seriously, though, way to go!!!

34. Let me crow too...
Completely debt free... but I do have three credit cards which I use fairly regularly. However, they always get paid in full at the end of each month. I have a credit score of 882 on a scale of 400-925. I keep the credit cards for paying monthly bills and ordering online... a very efficient mode of transaction. Also, I think it is a good idea to have a credit record established. Of course, the higher the better.

Anyway, congratulations and welcome to an ever-diminishing club!

43. Same here with the cards
great way to itemize the bill - they get payed off every month, we have a mortgage, but we make an extra 2 payments a year and our house has doubled in price since we bought it 2 years ago.

Not exactly debt free but I think we are doing all right.

Should have seen me in my 20's - it was a disaster, never thought I would be where I am today telling people how good things have gotten in the last 5-10 years.

Good thread!

48. Major congrats, Javaman -
and to do it at your young age, too! It's tough for us to not use credit cards because my medical bills would use way too much cash. Eat or pay the doc time.

But IF my disability ever kicks in, bye-bye credit cards. Jeeps are paid for, motorcycles are paid for, house is paid for - and we are striving to pay cash for everything else.

Great news for you! :bounce::thumbsup::bounce:

I'm the same age as you and we've got two kids, ages 9 and 12, AND we live in CA, so there you have it. It'll be a looooong time til we're completely debt free, but we are working our way towards it.

We double our principal payment every month, with the plan to pay off the house within 15 yrs. We've got about 8 more years to go, hopefully.

56. You are my idol!!!!!
I am currently working very hard on paying off my debt. It's very hard but every extra $ goes toward that mastercard. Last year I got socked with a lot of unforeseen expenses and ran the card up to $8700. I am currently at a balance of $3000. Been living on peanuts to make the auto payment of $400 + and additional $200 plus anything left over in the bank account right befor payday. Put my whole tax refund check on it all $3000 of it. I hope to be credit card free by July 06. Then I will take whatever the amount I'm putting on the card and put in on the car-plans are to have that paid off by May 07. After that the mortgage. I sooooo want to by debt free and cash only ASAP. I just got tired of paying everybody else my money.

The fact we haven't put a gun up our mouths and pulled the trigger speaks volumes.

Oh, I've been whittling away $35k. Down to just under $10k. 18 months to go... Will the economy collapse before then? Will I lose my job? Will other factors prompt me to get the gun after all? Who knows. Chances are just as equal, I'll be able to pay it all off by then.
