Hot Beef Sandwiches
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 03:48 PM by AngryAmish
When I was a kid my mom would make me hot beef sandwiches. She would buy them meat frozen in a bag with the gravy included. Then she would throw the bag in boiling water for a while then serve on white bread. They were wonderful.

Do they still make this product?

3. I'm from Chicago
Lord knows I know Italian Beef.

The hot beef I was talking about was gravier (browner and thicker) than the juice on an Italian Beef.

So, what is your favorite beef stand?

4. I don't know if they still sell the packages like that
but I remember those from childhood too, but my mother usually made them for the next couple days using the left-overs of a roast beef dinner.

And now I think I'm going to have to put openfaced hot roast beef sandwiches on next weeks dinner menu. :) We can use deli roast beef in a pinch.

9. I think so.
My mom use to do the same with the turkey and gravy, as well as the beef.

They come in little one-serving boxes, as well as family-sized.

The small ones were called "sandwich toppers" or something like that.

11. Boil bags.
I grew up w/ those.

I don't know if they still make them or not. I have a friend who works for Banquet (ConAgra). They used to make them-I'll ask if they still do or not.

BTW-we used to boil two pans of water, add instant potatoes to one and the boil bags to the other. Then it was the Wonder Bread, a layer of instant potatoes and then the meat and gravy bag on top.

12. Swanson used to make boil-in-bag beef. Now Hormel...
has microwaveable beef tips and gravy, which do the same job.

Here's Hormel's "recipe" for a hot beef sandwich and mashed potatoes:

14. Sometimes they're called "manhattans"
not the drink and named after some Dutch place, not the place in NYC. Hot beef (or turkey or chicken) and gravy over bread, or mashed potatoes and bread.

The place I see them the most often is on Amish restaurants in Indiana :D

My mom used to make them when we had leftover meat and gravy, so I have never seen them frozen. I'll have to keep an eye open for that.
