This weekend I watched the Devils Rejects , Rob Zombies sequel to House of 1000 Corpses - which was in short, lame. DR, on the other hand, is nothing short of pure cinematic genius. Zombie strips out all the psychadelia, Dr. Satan and ghoulies and zombies from the first flick, and gives us, in essence, a road movie. With Serial Killers.
The film is brilliant on so many levels - whether its the sheer nihilism that in the end, beyond good and evil, we are all merely predetor and/or prey. And this can shift at any time. Or it could be the stylistic directing that harkens back to the seventies method of "more with less."
Their home from the first movie is raided by the cops, and Sheriff John Quincy Wydell - who's brother died in the first film - is set on revenge. He sees himself as "God's warrior" just as the Firefly clan see themselves as doing the "Devil's Work." Good vs. Evil - only it's not that simple. The Firefly clan then go on the run, and this sets up the rest of the film.
Make no mistake though - this flick is not for everyone. It's brutal, gory, cruel and sadistic. The main characters are indeed serial killers, who taunt and torture their victims before killing them. And later on, Sheriff Wydell tortures the clan himself.
Music is another thing Zombie uses for full effect. I don't think I've ever seen such a good use of "Midnight Rider" or "Freebird" in a movie before. Even when poor little Jenny did her tapdance in a highrise in Forrest Gump can come close. Whenever I hear "Freebird" now I will forever think of the last scene of the movie.
But if you have the stomach for it - check this film out. It will scare you, and make you think.
