Sorry, I had my fill of Florida years ago.

I'd suggest somewhere in the western part of North Carolina, near Ashville, NC. I was there in 1970, so it's been a long time ago, but it was great.

Or you might take a look at WAY out here in Oregon. We have a mild climate, dry summers, and not as much rain as you might think (October - June is the rainy season).

Of course, a lot would depend on what kind of work you do and what kind of family commitments you have. We followed a daughter out here and haven't regretted it one bit in the eight years we've lived here.

72. It doesn't rain all the time for eight months! That's the secret!
It might sprinkle a little or there would be a few hours of a misty rain -- then sunny. That is counted as a rainy day only by the weather people keeping score.

Portland has more overcast days than cities in the east.

120. Our property taxes are a bit high but we don't have a sales tax.
Also, you CAN'T pump your own gas. I love that law! I don't have to feel guilty for not getting out of the car. And the gas isn't more expensive than most other coastal area.

to Vancouver, Washington. We used to get better prices in WA on gas, but I don't know about prices recently.

134. Medeak, job opportunities seem to be quite good here in Portland.
We're both retired, but we have younger friends who tell us this. Plus, the online advertisements have burgeoned at:

www.portlandjobfinder.com

I don't know about entry level jobs, of course. What kind of fields are your children studying/looking at?

Property taxes are high in cities everywhere; Portland is no exception. It all depends on where they settle and what they own. Further out from the city itself, taxes are less.

Good luck whatever you and they do! Yes, we have explored many walking trails. We do a lot of city walking just around our neighborhood.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

She was a stage manager in NJ/NYC, got a great job down in FL, moved to Hollywood. Two years later, she's bored so she's moving back up to NJ so she can return to the NJ/NYC theatre scene. Less money, more competition, but better theatre.

38. Well, for something entirely different, you
could go northern New England rural. I admit I'm prejudice, but there are worse places to park.

Your life will change. For one thing, you'll learn to drive through a foot of snow down a 13% grade, around a 90 degree curve and avoid a ton of moose who, for some moosey reason, wants to pancake your car. On the other hand, you could see a snow capped mountain wrapped in a red and gold shawl of autumnal maple and birch and crowned with a rainbow.

113. Yes - and not just London
The whole country - we're getting increasingly surveilled.

Now we're going to get compulsary I.D. cards (or rather de facto compulsary) backed up by a database with biometrics for everybody in the country.

Obviously they wheel out the old "only the innocent have anything to fear" motif - but that's pure nonsense, and has already been proved as such several times.

116. The notion that "only the innocent have anything to fear" has been disprov
disproved.

Apparently if the police already have your D.N.A. samples they will use that as circumstantial evidence that you are of a "criminal type" even where there is no D.N.A. evidence to match. This is the start of what the civil libertarians said was bound to happen, and which will end up with being expected to prove one's identity for no reason at all....

93. probably

I think I'm taking the train down to Florida before I drive west. The only three dates I have committed to are: the march in NYC, the garlic festival in Gilroy and picking MissHoneychurch up at the airport the first weekend in September.
The train trip dates haven't been discussed yet so I don't know which way I'm heading before or after that.

It is a beautiful college town.....I think the Claremont Colleges are there....

It is some distance east from me....but not bad.

The drawbacks: It is hot and smoggy in the summer.....

But it would be great to have you out here! You'd love the lack of snow!

And as for the smog...it isn't as bad as it used to be.....But the Claremont area does get hot. A/C is a must, and everyone has it.....

The worst part of Idaho to drive through is the southern portion heading east. It's all dry, plain desertland, and in the middle of July is all brown and yellow and unrelenting sun.
